So I'm a freshman at UC Davis, and I just finished up quarter 1. I ended up finishing with a 3.45 (I would've gotten a 3.5+ if I just gotten .5 more percent in a class, but that's just complaining).

Anywho, I was curious if I should even apply to Brown University (the only school I would even apply transferring to) because I've been reading that the cut-off (although never clearly stated) is a 3.5.

Any advice would be great.

Oh my other stats are:
SAT 1s: 1820/2400 [yeah...terrible I know]
SAT 2s: 640Math, 610Lit, 520Physics
Major : English
Grade Distribution:
Asian American Studies: Contemporary Issues of Asian Americans: B+
English 42: Approaches to Literature: A
English 46C: Masterpieces of Literature (1845-Present): B+
Geology: Earthquakes and other Disasters: B

My twin brother is also in this same case. Is it worth applying to "very competitive" institutions with only a ~3.44? His excuse is that he was sick this (first semester) and will supposedly do better, but will the transfer admissions even care? All they'll have is the first semester's grades and his high-school transcript to initially assess him... that sounds like a losing deal, doesn't it?

In regards to your GPA, i think you're waving your white flag way too soon. after all, you do have another quarter to potentially boost your GPA before the midgrade report is due (assuming that your school goes by quarters).
Nevertheless you should keep in mind that Brown is EXTREMELY selective and a high GPA alone isn't enough to get you in. They will also heavily consider your high school rec, ex activities, and SAT scores, and based on the stats you provided, those don't exactly look like they're in your favor. If you are really serious about applying to Brown, just keep in mind that u may need to work on other aspects of your application as well. Anyways, i wish u good luck.

If you don't try to transfer this year, what about after next year? Then you'll have more time to boost your grades. I know Brown has transfer admission of like under 10% I think, but check it out- somewhere around there.

Thanks for the honest replies, it means a lot.

And so then I suppose I have three follow up questions:
1) I'm pretty certain that I have great Recommendation letters on lock (I say pretty certain because you never know what the prof./TA is thinking), would that improve my chances at all?
2) Would applying sophomore year with a more solid GPA be a better option?
3) What other "high-caliber" schools are in my transfer range? [high-caliber I mean better than Davis on the US news kind of thing]

I'm not bashing on Davis. In fact, I enjoy it very much, but I'm just curious what my options are considering high-level schools to attend grad. school [for English/Creative Writing]
