If you have financial aid and/or scholarships to cover the cost of college, you don’t have to pay for living expenses, and your tooken care of by your parents is it ever okay to quit a Part time Job in retail or fast food? Sure, it’s nice to have money for fun but why pay taxes for all the people who aren’t doing good with there lives? Everybody always says that you should never quit a Job without another one lined and that there will be consequences if you leave your Job. Would quitting my Job to focus on school be a good reason to give when asked in an interview? Would employers understand? I know this is a personal Question/Choice!

“Sure, it’s nice to have money for fun but why pay taxes for all the people who aren’t doing good with there lives?”
Believe me, if you are working a part-time retail or fast food job, you will NOT be paying enough taxes to take care of anyone else’s life. Besides, others support you through their tax dollars. Who paid for your K-12 education? The roads you travel on? Police, fire, and other public services? Your local library? All these things and more are paid with tax dollars. Educate yourself and don’t fall into the trap of believing you are paying for “all the people who aren’t doing good with there lives (sic)”.

I Just hate paying for all the crackheads!
Well, then don’t worry because you are NOT. Don’t flatter yourself that the tiny bit taken out of your pay is paying for anything but yourself. I’d bet that you receive most/all of it back absent FICA at tax time given the amount you earn. FICA (social security and medicare taxes) are paid to support YOU in your old age. Your employer is also contributing to FICA on your behalf as well.
Reread my post above and read online and educate yourself on taxes. Somewhere you are getting erroneous information and by repeating it, you aren’t sounding informed at all in your posts.
@doschicos How do I seem uninformed in my posts other than me acting like I don’t know much about taxes? Most of my other posts are just personal issues and not relating to things that affect us as a whole! I’m just saying I think people who wanna be criminals should contribute to society rather than take our hard earned tax dollars! It would be nice if we didn’t have to pay for correctional facilities and then more of our had dollars would go to roads, education, public safety, and other beneficial things. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we have to keep criminals incarcerated!
@doschicos but is it ever okay to quit a Job without another one lined up? That’s the main Question, Not taxes!
You should never quit a job unless you have another one lined up. It doesn’t make sense to quit a job and then you are left with nothing.
A lot of your questions are personal, and answers will differ based on family values. You need to talk to your mom before you quit your job.
@AW1996 what if work is interfering with school and they won’t work with my schedule?
@austinmshauri my mom wants me to do what feels right for me! She would not be disappointed with me if I quit my Job!
Do you want to quit working to focus on school or because you don’t want to pay taxes that support things you don’t like? Unless you never get another job, your taxes will still support those things. If you decide not to work, you’ll be one of them.
In other threads you talk about traveling and seem to resent people who have families who will buy things they “want and need.” Later on you said you live with your mom and she wants to take you on vacation but the time isn’t convenient for you. Now you say she won’t mind if you quit your job. I’m not really clear about your situation because it seems a little fluid. Can your mom afford to contribute to your school expenses? If she can’t afford to help you cover things like books, spending money, etc., how do you intend to pay for those things if you quit working? Who’s going to pay for the trips you want to take?
If your current job refuses to work around your school schedule, it’s time to look for a new job. But I wouldn’t quit that job until you find another one because if you don’t really want to work it’s going to be too easy to not find a new one.
@austinmshauri financial aid covers books, spending money is another thing I hate doing because when I go to a store or restaurant I hate giving them money if there customer service isn’t good, and I mostly wish to quit my Job to focus to school.
Setting aside the fact that your personal taxes, on a part-time retail or fast food job, will likely NOT transfer into enough benefits to keep a single crackhead high for even one day, your question of whether one should ever quit a job without having another one lined up is an excellent one.
In general, my philosophy is that one should never quit a job without having another one lined up, but there are exceptions and your situation probably fits into one. If you are really working part-time just for spending money and you have another source for that and you will be using the freed up time to study and focus on school, then maybe you should quit. I don’t know that you have to explain quitting a college job in any way other than to say that you wanted to study more and you were fortunate enough that your family is able to give you spending money If you only held the job for a few months, you needn’t even list on your resume.
In the interest of full disclosure, my 25th birthday present to myself was to walk into the office of my then boss at the law firm where I was toiling away for $300/week (it was the mid-80’s) in a horrible environment and announce: “Happy Birthday to ME, Mr. X. Consider this my two week notice.” Although I had been interviewing, I didn’t have a new job lined up and I did have student loans. I still lived at home, where I was required to pay rent and buy my own food, clothing, etc. and pay for my own phone. I was unemployed for one awful month before I got a phone call from a firm I had interviewed with while still working. I was afraid to say I was available immediately so I told them I needed to give two weeks notice. I wish I hadn’t because it turned out that starting after July 1 meant that it took an extra year to accrue more vacation time, etc. I wound up staying at THAT job for over 20 years, until I was purged in a downsizing. At the time I quit, although I had student loan debt, I didn’t have a family to support. Although I was a practicing attorney, I would have taken a job in retail (but NOT fast food) to pay my loan, if necessary.
So, for you, OP, I suggest learning more about taxes and focusing on finding a job you’d enjoy more.
I’m stubborn and would not quit a job without having another one lined up because I like having my own money. If there is nothing illegal or physically harmful going on, I would keep my job. Employers do not understand just quitting a job because they are like everyone else - they are working for a living despite how they feel.
I would set a decent college schedule and show my employer to see where we can work around my classes. If it is not going to work out, seek a job with employers know to hire students and support them. McDonalds, Chick-fail-a are examples of companies that support students.
You do need to try and relax a little about life. All the crackheads? Consider that all the crackheads were once children who probably didn’t ask for their difficult childhoods. The proportion of crackheads who came from loving, financially stable homes is probably minuscule. If our society took better care of each other, instead of an “every man for himself” attitude, we would all be better off. You are lucky you have a mom who wants you to do what you think is best for you.
Just take a step back for a bit and think about how you want your life to play out. I personally think there is nothing wrong with young people quitting jobs without another job lined up. You seem really stressed out, and it might do you good to just focus on college. You are not going to ruin your future career by leaving a job at this stage.
You’re not paying for anyone.
And if you’re at a CC, you are getting WAY more in government subsidies than you’re paying with a part time job.
I really hope that someone just got out for summer break and is just bored.
Your attitude on taxes frustrates me You are attending a CC which is funded by taxes. You are getting Pell grants which are funded by taxes. Your K-12 education was funded by taxes. You drive on roads, get police and fire protection etc. all of which are paid by taxes. Yes, there are some things tax monies go to that any one of us may not approve of, but you need to grow up and look at the big picture. You are getting much more from tax money than you are putting in.
You have stated elsewhere that you are low income so working over the summer (especially when you are not attending classes over the summer) should be something you should want to do to get spending money, help your family, save for a 4 year college etc.
Work isn’t always fun. That is why they call it work. If you don’t like where you are, then use your free time to seek out a better position.
And again, you seem dissatisfied with so many things I strongly suggest you seek out counseling (as have many others on this board).
@happy1 i’m sorry that you see all this. Sorry I was rude or argued with you in previrus posts. I promise I scheduled an appointment for counseling. Did my explanation marks make my posts and replies crude in my previous posts? I know it was words too, not just grammar that made my posts not good.
@SuperGeo5999 in your travel thread you said you weren’t taking summer classes.
How long do you except your mom to take care of you? The rule in our house is after high school graduation you are in school or you are working. No such thing as a ‘summer off’. In our house it would not be acceptable to quit one job without having another one lined up without a compelling reason.
@happy1 you have good encouragement!
