Hello! I am currently writing my personal statement but then I got stuck with the part wherein I have to answer why I am interested in attending this university. Will these things below be appropriate reasons for why I want to attend this university?
Should probably write about what makes you different from everyone else. I don’t think admission officers want to read a statement on the 5 reasons you listed. Here are 5 I think you should consider:
You should take me as a student because…
I’ve had many problems in my life and here’s how I overcame them…
One of my greatest achievements is…and this is what I’ve learned during my journey…
What makes me different from all the other people who have the same or higher grades and test scores as I do is…
Have a conversation (literally) and just talk about what truly interests you.
If all the prompt asks for is to tell them why you want to attend their university, you should talk about what you’re interest in doing with your time at their university if you were accepted.
While I am not an admissions officer, I would honestly put in the reject pile. Safest states is comical. Your comment about religion and alcohol seem quite odd in the modern world. Most schools have no religious influence and countless students drink in the grand scheme of things. Are you going to business and law school or getting an undergrad degree?
I think the adcom knows all that about the school. They’re looking for evidence that you’ve done your homework and really want to attend their school for reasons that will make you stay for 4 years.
What are you planning to study, and what about THAT business/law school makes it a good academic enviornment for you? How are their internships? Do they offer a different twist on your major than the other schools nearby? How’s their career placement? Alumni organization (think networking for jobs)??
and scubadive, I’m applying for the undergraduate program. Thank you for your comment. Guess I have to think more on why I want to study in this university.
Then look for what THEY think makes them different…and then talk about those things. Throw in an example too.
So if Muhlenberg says “Here, students don’t have to choose between theory and practice or between ideas and their application. They are all integrated into what we simply call a Muhlenberg education.”
Then you could include “To me, a college should not be strictly practical or strictly theoretical. Muhlenberg offers the best of both worlds, with programs like internships allowing students to get a taste of the real world.”
Think about what you do better than everyone else around you (It can be ANYTHING. I mean ANYTHING. You can talk about being the best poker player ever, the number one dirt bike racer in your neighborhood, the best League of Legends/First person shooter/Call of Duty player in your school, your instrument skills, your ability and motivation to solve problems when you face one, your desire to become a ___________ and this is what you've done...
Be very specific here. Do some thorough research and know what you're talking about because these admission officers can tell someone who fakes interest and someone who has real interest. Search for some program/major(s)/clubs/labs/etc. that they have and interest you. Tell them what you plan to do at their university regarding the interests you researched.
The question is basically asking about your ability to contribute to the university.
1) should probably talk about leadership/tutoring/community service/qualities you picked up and how they shaped who you are and how you'll bring what you've learned to the university to try your best to improve the community. Sorry I'm being a little vague here but you know you more than I do so I can only be general here.
2) An example you could do is talk about your humorous quality (thus write a funny statement, but don't overdo it where it gets cringy).
3) Another example is discuss some great achievement of yours and how you plan to achieve even more once you get to the university. Note, this achievement should probably be something that the university will see as a treat to have at their university.
