I got a 12 on my essay, but a lower composite score (lower by one point) and only did better on one section than on my previous testing date (I got an 11 on my essay that time). Which would be better to send to colleges? I'm looking at the Ivy Leagues and a lot of the top private schools.

I’m in a similar situation (sort of): I got a 32 with a 12 essay, but I, recently, got a 34 with a 10 essay. Essay score doesn’t matter as much (or nearly at all) for ACT to colleges, just send the higher composite score.

Your best bet would be to send the higher composite. I was lucky enough to get a 12 on the essay on my highest composite, so I never had this dilemma. But if the school you’re sending the scores to practices score choice, you might want to send both scores.
