When my daughter interviewed and visited Newhouse we discussed the option of transferring in to Newhouse after freshman year if admission was for SU and not Newhouse. We were told it is very doable as long as grades are good.

At admitted student’s day for my son (2yrs ago) this question came up - how to transfer into Newhouse. Answer is at end of Freshman year, they look at GPA of the potential internal transfer students, draw a line, and everyone above the line gets in. The line is based on how many slots they have open. Example was that a GPA of 3.5 or above had a good chance of getting in to Newhouse. They also said, it didn’t matter if the courses were hard or easy - pure GPA.

To add to BillysDad2014, we were told that the student wanting to transfer needs to choose freshman classes “carefully” (i.e. easier classes) in order to have a better chance at a higher GPA at the end of freshman year.

I heard the same thing as urbanparent on the choosing the “easy” courses. But geez, pick what you want to do and if a transfer happens switch gears. Otherwise, you could be through 2 semesters with courses under your belt that aren’t what you want to do when you grow up.

^^to add to above, Newhouse has a boatload of arts and sci requirements…the easy classes to pick for freshman year should try to fulfill those distributions so you can accomplish both a high GPA and courses you would have to take anyway…

If this is an option that one chooses to take, try to find the Newhouse course requirements that you can get out of the way; I do know for a fact that the intro comm course (I think it is 107?) is open to anyone…

My daughter is a senior who was a direct admit, but many, many of her friends accomplished this transfer after freshman year…

She has had a great educational experience…
