Is it hard to get into classes at Pitt?

My older D has a lot of trouble getting into the classes she wants at her university of 13,000 undergrads. Pitt is even bigger. Can any current or recent students tell me if you have difficulty getting the classes you want? My younger D has been accepted. Thanks.

My D is a junior at Pitt. Class registration is done at an assigned time for each student based on the number of completed credits you have. AP credits count and there is no benefit to honors college members. My D had credits for 4 courses through APs so she started with 12 credits.

Freshman year was the only time my daughter had any trouble and even then it wasn’t too bad. For her first semester freshman year she was waitlisted for one section of a course during Pittstart and eventually got in sometime over the summer before classes started. Her second semester freshman year there was one elective course she wanted that filled up so she choose another. Since then she hasn’t had any trouble. I do remember her telling me about one friend freshman year that had no AP credits so she was really last in line for registration, and had her whole potential schedule that she had developed with her advisor destroyed before it got to her registration time. The girls in the dorm were all working with her to come up with alternative schedules that would work. I think in most cases its not that you won’t get the class you want, but that you might have to sign up for a time you don’t like.

Thank you, @me29034. That’s part of my older D’s problem, that she came in with no AP credit. My current senior is taking APs, but I don’t know if she’ll get credit. Sounds like she may run into the same problem.

Thanks, @mommdc. I was worried that you’d need 5’s to get any credit.

@me29034 starting with this new freshman class, Honors college students will get priority registration.

I speak only from reading posts of other Pitt parents, but it does seem that Dietrich’s students have a tougher time getting classes. It seems to die down after freshman year though.

Engineering students tend to have no big issues other than they might not get the specific section they want.
