for incomming freshman, is it hard to get the classes you want? that's kind of lame if we have to do your SIR early to get the earliest CALSO just to get the classes we want. I need more time to decide.

i'm an engineering student w/ lot of ap credit if this matters.

I've had an fine time getting the classes that I want. Here's one thing to consider- there are so many classes that I want to take, it would be hard not to find something. I've always planned at least one class extra in each semester than I would actually take, and have always been able to get more than a full schedule. While you might not get it initially on telebears, if you are persistent, and by that I usually mean checking telebears once-in-a-while, you'll get what you need. I've been somewhat lucky, but I'm no special case.

To answer one part of your question, HS credits won't cover breadth or most core reqs. If you choose to get some of these things done during your first year (let's say about 2 electives a semester), there's a pretty hefty number and variety of classes available for this purpose. And many of these classes are larger, so low seniority/later Calso registration shouldn't impact your enrollment all that much.

Some of the reqs. for any major, however, are a different story. Major advisers can usually give you a better sense of what weeder/seminar/intro courses fill up quickly.

I haven't had a problem yet with classes. To be honest, I think that's a bigger problem often for upperclassmen. Even though they have priority registration sometimes a class they need for graduation or whatever isn't being offered or is already full b/c/o the size. Most freshmen intro classes are enormous, and even if you don't get in during TeleBears, just go to lecture and you could still get in .
