Is it hard to meet people here?

I may be an incoming (out-of-state) freshman for fall 08. I'm not super-outgoing, but I'd like to make a lot of friends in college. Could someone please tell me about the people in general? Are they very exclusive?

Hi srabiee90. I was an out-of-state freshman. My advice is to join a couple of clubs that fit your interests to meet new friends. Club members will be friendly and accommodating (as they should, if they want to attract new members). If you live in the dorms, you should have minimal problems bonding with your hallmates. Your RA will put on programs (my RA took us downtown and back on the bus, etc.), the residence hall you live in will put on events (we did a San Nic Olympics my freshman year which was great), and the RHA (that's the Residence & Housing Association in charge of all residence halls) also kickstarts the year with an ice cream social and a Hub dance, and more. People are not the snooty, exclusive type here at UCSB. You will find mostly friendly faces!

good to hear. Thanks :)

People will be friendly if you are. Its a laid-back atmosphere, right on the beach. And unlike most campuses in CA its residential, meaning everyone lives on or very near campus. So the people you meet will live nearby and its easy to get together. Contrast this with a commuter campus where someone may live a 30-minute or more drive away, which makes getting together for casual things more difficult.
