since I imagine New York as noisy (haven't been there in 10 years or so), is it hard to concentrate?

Nope. There are quiet places too. The library’s usually pretty quiet, although it’s packed during finals. Depending on where you live, your dorm can be pretty quiet also.

Because nobody in Ithaca or Hanover NH blasts their stereos?

“Because nobody in Ithaca or Hanover NH blasts their stereos?”

…what are you talking about?

“..what are you talking about?”

Ithaca, the home of Cornell, and Hanover, the home of Dartmouth, a.k.a. two of our fellow Ivies also have students in their late teens and early twenties who, just like students in NYC, have stereos that blast sound that will create a din just like NYC traffic can (but CU’s in a pretty quiet neighbourhood)

“since I imagine New York as noisy (haven’t been there in 10 years or so), is it hard to concentrate?”

this is an issue living on the first floor of an NYU dorm on a busy street, columbia has no such problems, maybe the odd ambulance siren in the middle of the night, which you become immune to after week 1. the campus is a cocoon.

it’s not noisy unless one of your neighbors is pretty loud. new york’s just as noisy as any other city, just because it’s better than other cities doesn’t mean it’s noisier.

noise canceling headphones ftw!

Someone has some logic.

Considering you randomly threw in two colleges that were never mentioned or referenced in the original post instead of actually answering the (very simple) question I wouldn’t say it’s you, mate. :p

Apparently if you live in the SW corner of campus (ie, ruggles, part of the street-facing side of john jay, or wallach) the parking garage that is at amsterdam and 114 is absolute horror at 6-7am

I lived on the campus facing side in JJ so I wouldn’t know but I remember ppl complaining about that.

Then again…the OP was about studying and I don’t know many ppl that study at 6-7am…

Yeah, it really all depends on where you live if you plan to study in your dorm. But you kind of get used to the city noises after a while. Worse case scenario, just head on over to Butler. But keep in mind that finding a spot around finals can be difficult.

Hardly random if others figured out exactly what I meant.

Wow, someone is in desperate need of a life/some friends if he is starting an argument over what he believed to be a witty remark based on little tidbits about Ivy league schools in his mid to late 20s (possibly even 30s if he started/graduated late). Seriously, 3000+ posts and a good number of them are sarcastic useless ones. His self-righteousness is annoying and I feel sorry for his pathetic outlook.

To answer the OP’s question. There are a lot of places on campus where you can escape from nuisances such as neighbors blasting music, sounds of traffic, etc. such as Butler or the other libraries. It should not be too big of an issue.

LOL @kiko

I never had a problem. Welll…except my neighbour sophomore year would come home drunk and stumble across the room and bang into the wall we shared…

…it’s ok, though. He was my friend :)
