is it hard to switch majors?

i am a rising senior in high school. i constantly hear my friends saying that getting accepted into a competitive major is very hard if you are an average student. i was wondering how hard is it to change majors in freshman year in college? I’m afraid that i will not be able to change my major during my first days in college if i go into an easier major. i have been dancing throughout my whole life and have won national awards. however, i also have a lot of interest in marketing. i feel like it would be very hard to change majors from dance to marketing.

It depends on the college. Some colleges have the same admission standards across all majors, others do not. It the college admits by major it is impossible to switch majors until the end of freshman year and even then it is competitive. For example if you are admitted to Carnegie Mellon as a history major it is virtually impossible to transfer to computer science even after freshman year.

Again it depends on the college.

It depends on the college. You can try to search the web for “change major [new major] [college name]”.

Sometimes it is no big deal, and sometimes virtually impossible.
For example, some schools you have to apply to the business school and can’t take business classes unless you get in. Others have a single door admissions policy and you can major in anything you would like (but if you applied as a dancer and switched to engineering you may not do well unless you have the math background).
Some colleges you have to apply by major and it is difficult to switch.

In many schools it is no issue to switch majors. But going from dance to marketing would mean switching programs/schools at many colleges which adds a level of difficulty.

If you are talking about a school where you apply to a specific major then it can be very difficult if not impossible to switch from a less competitive major into a more competitive major – colleges are wise to that bait and switch routine.
