Is it harder or easier or equal to get into LSA

Hahaha Alexandre, are you serious? Even with the…gulp…C in first term Honors Geometry?

My dad says not to worry about it either, but idk. What do you think about the Bio grade?

Sorry to be annoying/obsessive!

No one will care about those first grades

Again… grades, IS, female… you are good

“Sorry to be annoying/obsessive!”

Yeah…about that! Listen, nobody is going to hold a C or B during your Freshman year against you. If you got mostly As during Sophomore and Junior years and are talking AP Calculus and Physics senior year, you have a reasonable chance. Add to that very good scores on the SAT and ACT, your in-state status and your gender, and you will be just fine. Apply EA!

Thanks for your help, both of you! My mind is now at ease.

Don’t think you can blow off your app though.
The posts above say that they think “you’re in”- there were a LOT of people this year who were like a “shoe-in” to Michigan with great stats, classes, essays, and recs and they got waitlisted or deferred.

Your GPA still is a tad bit low, so I’d definitely try to ace your finals if those are coming up and I’d definitely try to find something to do this summer to make your app sound better.
So while you might have a good chance of getting in, just know there are literally thousands of students with apps just like yours, on par, better, or worse.

^ I wouldn’t say “just like mine.” I actually have very unique ECs, a volunteer cause I’m very passionate about (that helps Detroit out), and I think I’m a good essayist.

None of what either of you said matters.

Thousands of students had her stats, yeah, but how many were IS?

Now you got that group. Cut it into another smaller group, females applying for engineering.

Now you look at that ANS that’s why we say she is in

hey mldwoody i have an idea you should be one of those students on the admissions committee so you can let me in!

From what I’ve seen females in CoE don’t perform worse in the classes. I could be wrong, evidence is just anecdotal and I don’t have that much of that, but I would be surprised if there was a “big” difference between the admission standards between males and females.

LSA is the easiest college to get into, if the original poster is still looking for an answer…

^ That’s not what I’ve been told… And doesn’t common sense suggest the art/nursing schools would hold that title?

Vladenschlutte, I agree. I was surprised to see so many females in TBP consider that only ~20% of the engineering population are girls.

Below are the average stats for CoE and Michigan overall (for the class of 2014):

Average GPA of admitted student:
CoE: 3.9
Michigan: 3.8

Acceptance rate:
CoE: 52%
Michigan: 50%

Average SAT of admitted students:
CoE: 1410
Michigan: 1400

Average ACT of admitted students:
CoE: 31
Michigan: 30

As one can see, there is no difference in the stats of the students admitted into the CoE and those admitted to Michigan overall. The main difference is the approach to admissions. The CoE relies more on statistics (GPA, standardized scores etc…) while LSA also looks at ECs, background and essays more closely.

For difficulty I think it goes like this

Art and Music are on their own, I mean… you need talent to get into those

Nursing and Kinesiology (sp) are not really hard either but I don’t think anyone really considers them.

That leaves Ross, CoE and LSA. Out of those 3, LSA is definitely the easiest

MLDWoody, Ross does not really count. It is too small and still designed for Michigan Sophomores, not high school seniors. And between LSA and the CoE, I think both are equally selective. Like post 33 clearly proves, there is no statistical difference in the admission standards between the CoE and the rest of the University.

^ Do you think CoE would be impressed with ECs at all though? Like would they carry some weight?

ECs will matter, and increasingly so with each passing year. A couple of years ago, Michigan received 25,000 applicants and accepted 50% of them. Next year, Michigan will likely receive close to 45,000 applicants and will probably accept fewer than 35% of them.

^ that’s the OOS statistic, right? 35%?

No, that’s for all applicants. The acceptance rate for international students will dip to less than 10% and for OOS students should be lower than 30%.

This year, Michigan received 38,000 applications. Next year, Michigan should roughly 45,000. regardless of how many students apply, Michigan will accept ~15,000 of those applicants. That’s is why I expect the overall acceptance rate to drop below 35% next year.

Don’t worry, it’ll still be easier for IS kids
