ED turn out to be easier? I, as a junior waaaayyy toooooo in love with a school she'll never get into, noticed a lottt lower stats for the ED thread than the RD thread?

I heard that ED has a more competitive pool of applicants?
Is this true?

Thanks guysss and congrats to anyone who got in!

ED is easier, because you’re committing to NW as a first choice; NW’s yield on RD applicants is much lower. However, you also don’t get the chance to compare financial aid packages before making a final decision.

Good, because I plan to spend the first two months of school solely on the NU ED application and then [if I don’t get in] make the January deadlines.(:

@lorem: But ED financial packages tend to be more generous than RD packages contrary to popular belief. But yes, it is much easier to get in. Acceptance rates: 35% ED vs 27% RD…A few years ago, I believe it was closer to 45% ED

My friend got in RD with a 27 ACT and a 4.8 weighted GPA [I’ll have around a 4.75 by the end of the year but it could be that I just took harder classes and had worse grades which isn’t good]. So I DO think my school is prestigious and NU notices that.(:

ED isn’t make-or-break. Many students are deferred and then get a chance at RD. If Northwestern is definitely your first choice and you can definitely afford it regardless of what you get for financial aid, then ED is worth a shot. If not, RD is for you.

Do I care about the money? In some ways, yes. Say I did not get into NU ED or RD. I would most likely go to the school that offers me the most money as long as its on my list. I think NU is the only exception since it is where i definitely want to go.

Its pretty painful to listen to your AP Human Geo teacher talk about Evanston in almost all of his examples.(;

Don’t get too caught up in worrying about financial aid for ED. If you absolutely can’t afford it you can be released from the admission, and colleges don’t like to do that so they give good FA to low income ED applicants. Also, if you get in before they spend all of their money on earlier students you’ll sometimes get a little better aid. I applied ED to NU and my aid was great.

Many students do NOT get deferred from ED at Northwestern. They only started deferring any students two years ago. Before that, it was only Accept/Deny for ED. They have deferred <50 a year.
