Is It Like The Movies? lol

Looking to transfer to FIU and I am one of those people who fell in love with what I see in the movies and pictures.

Is FIU the ideal college experience? How is life in the surrounding city?

I will appreciate any responses. :)

Hi NY. Where are you transferring from? I am going to give you my own honest opinion. I know people may disagree, but that’s fine. Honestly, I don’t like FIU at all and I am transferring out next semester. There is such a lack of focus on academics and it seems like everyone who applies is admitted aka there are lots of people who don’t exactly deserve to be in college. It almost feels like community college  It also depends on what type of person you are. Me being the studious type who really doesn’t like partying at all, it really sucks being here. I am assuming that you are interested in FIU basically because it is in Miami and I totally get that! But FIU is overcrowded as is Miami in general and it’s just not my cup of tea. I would suggest looking into UM. It is beautiful and it is MUCH more selective academically so there is a higher caliber of students. Honestly Miami is very overrated and I cannot WAIT to leave. Unless you are rich, Miami is just a hot, dirty, overcrowded city. Then again that’s just me. You may very well love it there. Do your own research and visit the school to really get a feel for it. Everything always looks better in movies and pictures :)

Wow thanks so much. That was the best response I got from this website.
I am currently in community college in NY and im looking to major in Hospitality. I heard FIU has a great program in that area.

I’m actually a lot like you. As someone who is interested in hospitality, I do of course love seeing cities that feels lively and has great places to visit but I am far from being a party person myself. I rarely go into that type of stuff.

I read a lot of reviews that pretty much said similar things that you have said. I think I am going to pass on FIU and transfer to somewhere in New York State where I could get the ‘college experience’ and I won’t have to pay non resident tuition. lol

I think it’s a city I’d still love to visit someday but I don’t think I’d be able to get a good education at an over sized campus. Thanks a lot for your response. I appreciate it.

And I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you, I hope wherever you transfer to will work out. :)

You’re very welcome. And yes it is true that hospitality is one of FIU’s stronger programs, but, in the grand scheme of things, I’m sure there are other programs that would make you more valuable in the working world UNLESS you want to live and work in Miami. But based on the fact that you are somewhat like me (not exactly the partying type) I think it would be smart for you to pass on FIU. It’s funny because I am dying to leave Miami for New York! I love the city and the state.

Miami is a great place to visit, but not so great to live in. lol. And thank you! I have already been accepted to Penn State and University of Miami as a transfer so now I just need to make a decision :stuck_out_tongue: I wish you the best of luck in you endeavors. I am sure you will do great. :)

UCF in Orlando has a great hospitality program as well.

Im thinking about going to fiu this coming fall but i also like palm beach atlantic?? i dont know if its a good decision im from new york and go to a small school but i love florida … anyhelp?

Hi Sammy. What do you like about FIU and what do you hope to gain from your college experience? I know that may be a tough question to answer. Would you like a small, close knit campus or a big campus with lots of people surrounded by a big city?

Hey miami4rmjax I’m going to be attending FIU this fall as a freshman and I’ll be doing the QBIC summer sessions as well. I just wanted to know if you had any student info about the program difficulty/reviews etc… and also if you could explain exactly how you went about applying as a transfer to UM, because like you, I am also the studious type and will most likely leave after my freshman year, or maybe sooner. I excelled academically in high school (Enrichment, E.C’s, AP’s, 3.8 GPA, Sports…), I just simply felt that it didn’t prep me enough to attend a university with a caliber as high as UM. Despite my 1820 SAT score from last year, I studied rigorously and will be re-taking SAT Math II, SAT Bio E/M, and the ACT. I want everything to be pristine before I present myself. I also wanted to know if you could throw me some tips about the transfer application process and whatnot, I’d really like to know how to dive into the essay topic, just so I have a general idea of what I’m aiming at. And if you don’t mind me asking, is the school generous with their scholarships? Like how much of tuition will they actually cover because I’m frightened of their steep expenses lol. I’ll be crushed if I get accepted and I can’t afford to go  Anyways hope to hear from you soon!

P.S. I’m actually from Pennsylvania and got accepted into Penn State too, what a coincidence.
