Is it neccessary to be in an International Relations program?

Sorry if this has been answered, I tried browsing for an answer but I didn't get anything specific.

Im interested in the International relations major but I was wondering if its neccessary to specifically take that major up for undergrads or is it okay to have an interdisciplinary major like political science/middle eastern studies? I keep seeing the major appear for grads unless its a prestigious school like georgetown etc.

Unless I misread..... Im semi-clueless. I just started looking up this major a few days ago but this question has been buggin me for a while.

thanks~!!

To OP

Heed zapfino’s advice and review his links and elswhere.

On a more personal note - my “S” is majoring in “IR/IA” as an undergraduate at GW. He was conflicted about PoliSci as a major. However, GW ESIA’s undergrad degree in IA is very good. He’s able to concentrate in Security Policy and Conflict Resolution - not sure he could do this with a PoliSci major in CCAS.

He’s planning on State Dept, USAID, Peace Corps, NGO’s. He realizes a Master’s Degree is usually needed at some point. That can be a Master’s in either PoliSci or IR.

He could also do this with a PoliSci major too. It really depends on the College/Program.

Agree with zapfino on all accounts. Don’t underestimate a fluent 2nd language in the field of IA/IR. Some Grad Schools will require that anyway.
