Is it neccessary to specify my major in ESSAY?

You know how people talk about making a 'theme' for application right
I want to do my major in economics&sociology and I did some EC related to economics/businesss and have many leadership positions in voluntary organisation clubs.
So I set my theme as an entrepreneur who has a strong empathy for the disadvantaged.
But the problem is that my essay (common app essay) is not related to my interests in economics at all.
It's about my personal experience with social minority and I'm afraid that this doesnt fit into my theme.
So my question is, is it neccessary to specify my intended majors in the essay??
would I look like a random, not angular student??

Thanks a lot

There is absolutely no need to specify or even mention your potential major in your essay unless the prompt specifically asks for it. Colleges will see the activities you participated in in relation to your major and want to see you as a person which can be about anything. It can even be better to talk about another aspect of your character so you don’t come off as one dimensional and so colleges see what else you are interested in.
