How neccessary is it to have a tv in college? Or a tv with a dvd player built in? Because I have a 13 inch tv but it doesnt have a DVD player built in. I'm assuming as long as I have the tv itself I'll be fine....just wanted some opinions before I spent money on some unneccessary items.

No, it's not necessary. Prioritize: buy books, clothing, laptop, supplies, etc...
THEN think about buying the extras. You can always buy a stolen player at a pawn shop, it'll run pretty cheap but you'll only get at most 15 days of warranty.

I'd just watch everything on my computer. If you want to watch it on a real tv, then you might see if the front desk at your dorm will rent them out. I know mine does.

And if not, I'm sure a roomate/floormate will have one.

My roommate is my identical twin, haha.

not necessary but it would suck without one.

As long as your computer plays DVDs, you certainly don't need a player in your tv. IMO, you don't need a tv at all, but at my school you can't get cable in the dorm rooms, so that's a large part of what defeats the purpose.

If you plan on bringing any consoles, you should probably get a TV, or at least a TV tuner card for you computer.

You can watch most shows online now.
I wouldn't bother unless you play video games.

It's COMPLETELY up to you and your lifestyle. Do you watch tv now? Do you have a dvd collection? Do you want to lessen the amount you watch tv in college?

At my college every dorm has at least one common TV that can be signed out for specific times.

Otherwise I agree with the posters above that it is much easier to watch tv on a computer.

Get a TV tuner for your computer and watch TV on that. Spend a decent amount of money, and you can even get HD stuff.

If you're still on the fence about it, head off to school and see if you miss it after a few weeks or months or something. You don't have to bring it the first time around, you know.

definetly bring a tv.. theres going to be those days where youll definetly want one to just chill out and flip through the channels like a bum. we didnt use ours THAT much, not even once a day but it wouldve sucked if i didnt have it.

dvd player isnt so necessary. we used it once and otherwise i watched dvds on my laptop if i was really in the mood because me and my roommate werent into the same things anyway

Well, it's nice to have something bigger than a 15 in laptop screen to watch movies on. My tv was a 21-22 in and it fit in our dorm fine, and was really nice to have around. We didn't watch it that much, and the dorm has a communal tv in the lobby that we would watch as a group together sometimes, but occasionally you do really just want to be a bum and channel surf. Or, a bunch of people downstairs might be playing guitar hero or halo on the lobby tv and you HAVE to watch Lost, or something. Things come up, and it's just nice to have one around.

I strongly second this, and I know a fair number of people who took this route (which is admittedly easier if you'll be driving back to campus after Thanksgiving, live pretty close by, or are waiting to buy rather than bring). If you have a TV with you from the start, then you'll probably find reasons to use it. If you don't, you might be surprised to find that you don't miss (or want) it. Most of the shows you'll really want to catch can be found online, and it can actually be really nice not to have mindless channel-surfing as an option.

Also, some schools don't have cable in the rooms. My school had terrible reception in the rooms, and no cable. A TV without a VCR or DVD player was basically useless, and with laptops that play DVDs, a TV with DVD/VCR was a luxury (good for movie nights and simultaneous working/online/etc. and DVD watching), not at all a necessity.
