I'm a US student going to McGill University in Montreal, Canada next year..that being the case, will graduate schools look unfavorably to me if I don't study abroad (esp. if my major is international affairs??)

also, i will be doing many internships in the US over summers and perhaps a semester as well. so i guess techncially thats studying abroad

Studying abroad is only going to help you further, especially for your major. Internships all over the US isn’t ‘abroad’; a different country is.

First of all let me say that I “hate” you cause you’re going to McGill. I remember that I really wanted to go to McGill, but for some reason I didn’t. I went to a good school, but I think that it would have been so great! Dress warm (unless you’re from Minnesota, in which case you can dress however you normally do in sub arctic temperatures.

McGill’s a great school. And it makes for such an interesting question!!! Is study abroad in Canada really study abroad!? I think that if you are studying in Montreal, the answer is 100% yes. Why? (1) French (so learn and speak French! Don’t just do the anglophone thing in Montreal!) (2) Quebec, and issues of independence from Canada (3) Canada is indeed a foreign country with a unique foreign policy, set of interests, etc.

Also, nobody’s saying that you can’t do a study abroad program (in Europe, for example) during your years at McGill.

That’s so funny about internships in the US as study abroad! lol!

4 years in Montreal will get you more than what a study abroad experience is supposed to give you.

One thing though–I don’t know what you’re work goals are, but if, for instance, as a pol sci major you wanted to work, you know, for uncle sam, doing “intelligent” things – you might be locked out because you don’t have a US degree. No idea how that plays out if you get a US grad degree or even if that figures in any of your plans.

Ugh! I really can’t stand that you’re going to McGill and I didn’t! Have an awesome time there!
