IS IT NECESSARYto bring a **CAR** to UBuffalo AND is it SAFE to do so?

Hello, i'm a 20 year old transfer student from LI. I know there are buses that transport students between the main campuses but will I be glad that I brought my car?? Does it really add a lot of convenience? Is it necessary?

ALSO, I have a newer-model Lexus and I want to know if it is safe to bring it to Buffalo since I know much of Buffalo is affected by higher crime?

It is certainly not necessary. There are free buses to take you from one end of the north campus and back, as well as between North and South campuses and the Medical campus. In addition, there is a shuttle to take you to the grocery store and other shops all day Saturday and one day during the week. The buses will also connect to Roswell Cancer Institute for working or volunteering. Additionally, the metro “train” stop is right at South Campus to go downtown - that is a small fee assessed by the city. If you are living on North Campus, it’s very safe to park your car on campus - less so on South Campus. Of course, it’s always more convenient to have a car on campus so you can go any place at any time. There is no charge for parking your car on campus as it is a part of the substantial comprehensive fee charged by UB.

Where will you be living? On campus? Off? Some of the off campus apts have shuttles to campus. If you are living elsewhere, you may need a car. Son has a new car (living off campus this year) and has no problem. You should not be in a high crime area.

Will be staying on campus

Are you requesting an apartment on campus or a dorm room? Does your major require assigned fieldwork? Grocery shopping without a car is a bit of a hassle from North Campus, although there is a grocery store directly across from South and a shuttle bus to stores in Amherst a couple of times a week. My daughter lives close to North but has all of her classes on South so she just parks at North and takes the shuttle during the week but definitely uses her vehicle a lot for shopping, recreation, fieldwork, visiting friends, etc. North Campus/Amherst is very safe and security patrols the lots on South. The off campus areas near South are prone to break-ins :(

My daughter lives in the Flint Village apartments on campus and does not have a car. I did notice that there are quite a few “nice” cars in the Flint parking lots and no reports of break-ins or theft so it would appear there are no concerns there. Also, she has no trouble using the busses to go grocery shopping and to the mall. As several have mentioned, it depends which campus you’re living on and what you may need your car for. If you’re living on North campus and your classes are there, your car is safe but you don’t really need one unless you have off-campus responsibilities or really can’t deal with public transportation for visits home.

i go to UB and i would recommend it. It’s more of a convenience rather than taking the bus and walking say in the snow or rain.

Necessary? No. Convenient? Yes. I’d say you’d probably be glad you did.

Safe? Yes. Amherst, where north campus is, is one of the safest towns in the country. Don’t take it to the east side of Buffalo or anything, but you should be fine around campus.

Not going to guarantee it doesn’t get scratched up or anything though. There’s plenty of college students who are bad at driving/parking, and you won’t exactly be keeping it in a garage. I wouldn’t worry about people breaking in or anything, but scratches and scuffs are a possibility.

If your car will be gathering dust at home, bring it with you. As a transfer student, you may make some new friends by having access to your car and if you are at North campus, your car will be safely parked. (as long as it is not needed by anyone at home)
