@luckymama64 - this may be true for some schools, but I do admissions counseling and I would never tell a student to do more letters than the school asks for. Read the requirements for the school carefully. I agree about letters for music students or athletes or another special area where a coach or mentor can be an added value. Also, if the alums you are referring to are really influential, they can call up the school and talk directly to who they know so I would take that with a grain of thought. For those schools who get thousands of applications, any added paperwork is an annoyance and may be a strike against the applicant.
My kid sent four LOR. All four were people who knew her well and sincerely cared about her future. Three teachers and a counselor. She got into her dream school, early admissions. She was also accepted to her back up schools. Meh, who knows? Sending more worked for my kid. Schools she was accepted to: University of Michigan (where she goes), Michigan State, and University of Pennsylvania.
