Is it OK to not write about your sport as an athletic recruit?????

Hi everyone,
I'm currently being recruited by Vassar and a number of NESCAC schools, and all of the coaches told me I would be supported in admissions. So I was wondering if it is absolutely necessary for me to write about my sport in my college essay? I want to avoid the cliché jock essays and was hoping to take a more unique approach. But since my sport is such a huge part of my life and my future college experience would it be detrimental to not mention it??

Actually, it’d be better if you let your athletic achievements speak for themselves thanks to a well-prepared “Activity” section on the CommonApp - and wrote about something else that’s entirely different. If your sport appears in the essay “organically”, then you can mention it (such as “I was leaving the basketball court after practice when I realized a rainstorm had started and I was expected to walk the 2 miles home”. The essay being how to got through the ordeal and what you learned from it.)

They already know about your athletic prowess. I think its a great idea to tell them about another aspect of your identity.

I disagree. If you are a recruited athlete, then it probably means you are spending 20+ hours/week on your sport. Tell the Adcom what this means to you. Avoid cliche essays (big game, agony of defeat, etc). Try to find something unique

Ok thank you so much for responding! I really appreciate the help! I think I’m going to highlight my sport in the activities and maybe some of the supplement essays, but for the common app i’m going to introduce some unique aspects of myself.

Ask the coach recruiting you. I was told by the coach to avoid talking about my sport in my essays, and if possible, my teacher recs should avoid them as well.
