This is my second year in Foothill College, and My GPA is currently 4.0 so for.
Because of my health condition (flu), I decided to take only 12 quarter units (minimum units for international students) for fall. I can finish all my pre-reqs and IGETC by spring quarter.

For the next quarter (winter), I have to take 2 IGETC courses which are really annoying subjects for me.
So, I am considering to take them P/NP.
Will it be a disadvantage if I take IGETC courses P/NP?

I was told I could take up to 14 semester units as pass/ np. I am currently taking my language courses as pass/ no pass. As long as they are not major pre reqs you should be fine.

No, keep the 4.0 at all costs. That’s what my daughter did. This ongoing debate about the UCs caring about a P is nuts. My daughter had 12 units of P and got into UCLA and UCB in an impacted major. GPA is everything…

Also, this other debate that you can have a 4.0 but if you have one P you won’t get into grad school! Stop the madness…

I earned and tried to keep my 4.0 for as long as possible, and then I got a B in a U.S. history class in fall 2012. My dreams of transferring with a perfect GPA died that day. :))

I talked with my counselor yesterday, and I was told that I can use 21 quarter units P/NP. I need four more IGETC GE courses, and those are 4 units each, so… 4x4 = 16 units. Will it be wise to take those courses P/NP? I really want to focus on my major pre-reqs rather than spending a lot of my time on GE classes.

In theory that is OK, but I will tell you my thoughts, which are only my layman’s thoughts.

Four IGETC P/NP. They might not care but that’s kind of a lot.

My daughter had a lame advisor at her CC and after the third mess-up, I kind of became her de facto advisor.

Her P/NP:
– Span 1 - 5 semester units
(She took Span 2 for a letter grade. Span 2 is part of IGETC, while Span 1 is transferable only, not part of IGETC.)
– Astronomy - 3 units
– Bio with lab - 4 units

So it was 12 semester units total, but only two IGETC classes.

My instinct would be to try and limit the IGETC P/NP to 2, maybe 3 if you have to.

If you have a lower level language, do that. They don’t care about the earlier classes, especially if the final language course is taken for a grade, as that grade situates you at that level. If no language is needed for the major, I would consider the language (even all of them) as possibilities.

Yeah, maybe I should take two IGETC P/NP. Actually my counselor told me the same thing as you said. "Taking four is too many, but 2 or 3 seems OK."I was just trying to make my life too easy, but surely, I should work hard rather than seeking easier ways.

BTW, Thanks for sharing your daughter’s worthy experience. That helped me a lot!
