Is it ok to talk mainly about a highschool experience for commonapp essay?

The common app's first essay says to elaborate on an extra curricular or job experience. I want to write about my passion for badminton, but majority of the important events occurred during highschool. I'm wondering if it's safe to write about how badminton has changed my life (I know, cliche) which, for the most part, happened during hs.

Also, do essays matter that much for transfers? Or is it mostly based upon GPA?

Well, keep in mind it’s only 1000 characters, so it’s gonna be tough to explain how badminton “changed your life.” It’s fine to write about a high school activity, assuming it’s something that still interests you.
