Is it ok to use SAT prep books to study for the SSAT or ISEE

I am a freshman in highschool, and I am trying to apply now to get into Lawrenceville or some other good BS next year. I already have a SAT prep book, but is this ok to use to study for the SSAT? For studying I have been using collegeboard.com and I have been memorizing latin roots. So will I do good if I keep using the SAT prep book or should I really go out and buy a book for the SSAT or ISEE? If I should buy a new book, what is a good one to buy? ~ Thankyou!

BTW, I am a straight A student, math and vocabulary are my strong points, but I some times am a little weak in reading comprehension. Any books that can improve that category? I know that this is a parent forum area... but I figured that parents would know more about this subject then my fellow peers. :)

I would advise getting one of the SSAT/ISEE books…

Check out the first post in this thread:

The vocabulary in the SAT prep books is similar to the SSAT vocabulary, but that’s about it. The SSAT has analogies, which take some practice, and some specific math information needed. These are covered better in any of the SSAT books (KAPLAN, PRINCETON REVIEW, etc.).

Hate to say it, but you’re like to get many more responses to this question in the main thread (and we respond to questions there also!) . . . but, my response, in a nutshell:

Yes, it’s helpful to get an SSAT-specific study guide. The SSAT is, well, different, and even though knowing math and vocab puts you way ahead of the game, you’re more likely to stumble if you aren’t familiar with the types of questions on the SSAT and the format of the test.

The study guide does not have to be new. A guide from 2005 should serve you just as well as the brand new edition just put out this year. And, in all likelihood, the practice tests at the back of the book will still be the same! So grab an older edition cheap on the internet - just make sure (before you buy) that the practice tests in the back are unmarked.

As for publisher, my son preferred Princeton Review . . . but I honestly don’t think it makes much difference.

Want more info? Do an advanced search in the main forum for older thread titles containing the word “SSAT”. Or if that doesn’t work, just go back about a year and take a look. There are several very long threads on the topic.
