YYY Financial Aid Office

Is it okay to contact the YYY College Financial Aid office if I have some questions regarding net price calculator and stacking the merit based aid on top of need based aid? Or student should only contact school, NO PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT whatsoever EVEN FOR AID PURPOSES.

You can contact the school.

I took the position that if it was about financial aid, records, conflicts or anything else that I had more information about than my daughter, I was the one who would contact the schools. My daughters knew very little about my assets, my 401k, my willingness to pay for college beyond what I told them. If they would have contacted the schools, the conversations would have gone like this:

School: How much does you parent contribute to a 401k yearly?
D: I’ll have to get back to you.

School: Does your parent own farm land?

D: I’ll have to ask (even though she knows we don’t live on a farm)

School: Do you have any special financial circumstances?

D: What are those? ( I’ll have to get back to you)

As the future payer, feel free to ask any questions. Most schools are ‘need blind’ in admissions, so the admissions office doesn’t even know you have contacted the FA office.
