My son has teachers who are willing to do his recommendation letters. He is applying to around 7 colleges. It seems to be a ridiculously large amount of work for the teacher to actually sit and fill the common application supplement teacher recommendation form out 7 times.

His teachers said they would write him a letter that he can use multiple times and he could then attach it to the Common Application Supplement Teacher Rec form. Of course the teachers would also fill out the form one time as well and then he could copy that as well.

Is it appropriate for him to copy the common app form and attach a copy of the original letter to send to each of the seven colleges that he is applying to?

What is the normal method that is done and is this acceptable to have a teacher write one letter and fill out one form and then make copies for all the colleges????

Normally the applicant gives the teacher the appropriate number of stamped addressed envelopes. The teacher then copies their letter of recommendation and puts a copy in each envelope. This way, the teacher saves time by copying and their letter remains private - at most schols - the student does not see the teacher’s letter.

The common App Rec Forms have a privacy notice that we have to sign.

From everything I’ve read, the recs are not as valuable if a student does not waive their right to access. It’s supposed to be a kind of protection for teachers to say what is on their mind to the college.

We were advised that we should give stamped envelopes to the counselor and teachers.

I know this is a 3 year old thread that I am bumping so my apologies in advance if this bothers anyone.

One of my D’s teachers gave her the recommendation letter and common app evaluation form and asked her to copy and mail them herself (didn’t want stamped envelopes). I assume that should be okay. The various colleges will have no way of knowing if my D or the teacher mailed them anyhow.

Should she write her common application number on the top of the form or just assume that the colleges can match them up to her online applications? TIA
