This year has been a little frustrating in my school's student council. Last year I ran tandem with a friend of mine for class president/vice president. I won vice president, which is what I was running for. She lost president to someone obviously running for the popularity factor.

Needless to say, this person really hasn't done anything. They hardly ever show up to meetings, and it's so bad that the teacher-sponsors think that I'm president and they're vp. I've done all of the administrative duties, etc. for our positions. I've done a bunch of projects and stuff, while they will likely be taking credit.

It's kind of frustrating. So my question is this: Should I put class president on my application? I've basically been class president, and almost all of my class thinks I'm president. Will adcoms ever verify this? Would it be better to put co-president down? I know this seems kind of like a small deal, but I would feel a lot better I got some feedback, as student council is something I put ALOT of time into.

Thanks a bunch for your response guys. I really appreciate it.

The truth is always the way to go.

I would say that you should put down VP. Better safe than sorry when it comes to these things…

Put vp. I know it sucks, but just in case.

This is obvious. You are not the president, so you cannot write that on your application. You CAN talk about the meaningful, substantial role you played as a vice-president when you are talking about the experience in interviews.

I agree… and when you do talk or write about it be very careful NOT to put the actual president down. That’s considered very bad form or indicate that you really did everything because they were incompetent or whatever. Only exception I could see to this would be if the other person were actually absent due to illness or something unavoidable you could mention that as why you were so involved… but otherwise just stick to what you did without any commentary on their role or lack thereof.

Well hold on a second, obviously you don’t want to lie on your app, but I wouldn’t give in just yet. If you really are doing all the president’s duties and everyone thinks your president why not have a talk with the teacher sponsor and get them to just give you the position? If they think you’re president already and the other person does absolutely nothing I don’t see why they couldn’t just hand the position over to you, especially because it’s important for your college app. It may not work, but I don’t think it would hurt to ask. Otherwise, I’d definitely put vice down. You can always explain it in your essays anyway,

I knew it! A trick question. No, you can’t list yourself as president. Of course you can’t. I suppose you could ask the sponsor to appoint you as president (as papertank487 suggests) but since it’s an elected position, there’s a good possibility that is not an option.

RECALL!?!?

Well, most of the time, colleges take you for your word, but there is the occasion where they may contact the counselor. In the likely scenario, you could get away with it but watch out if the actual president is applying to the same school b/c it may then bring some doubt. But even if you put VP, it’s still fairly significant (as opposed to secretary or treasurer).
