Is it okay to send 3 letters of recommendation to JHU?

I read online that 2 letters are required by JHU, but it didn't say anything about 3. So would it be alright for me to send an additional letter in the application?

I read somewhere in JHU that they ONLY read 2 letters that you send them. If you have more than the recommended, they just pick 2 letter randomly out of how many ever you have sent them. The reason for this is that they have tons of applicants that they must cover for as well, and so the reading can get a bit overwhelming (and boring sometimes). Remember that quality is much greater than quantity here, so you should consider asking only those teacher whom you know very well.

I’ve *never *heard that before. Unless the policy has changed in the last few months, it’s definitely okay to send in “supplemental” letters of recommendation in addition to the ones that Hopkins requires. That said, I wouldn’t over-do it and I would only send in an extra letter if it would reveal something about you that your other letters and/or your application wouldn’t. It’s a waste of your time (and the admissions committee’s time) to send in a third letter that says nothing beyond “John Doe was in my AP English class. He was a good student and always turned in his work on time. He got an A- in my class”. That said, if you have a third letter (or maybe a fourth, but really, that’s as far as you should go) that you think would really help your application, you should definitely send it in.

Edit: for the record, my recommendation of 3-4 letters max wasn’t just a random number I came up with - it’s based on previous posts by AdmissionsDaniel here on CC

Yeah, one admission officer said that it’s great if you send an additional letter from someone who knows you really well. It will help!

I think that one or two additioal recommendation letters are fine, but they don’t want more than a total of four.
