I’m 19 years old and a nursing major, due to irrelevant circumstances I landed myself with a 2.0 GPA and I’m in my first year. I’ll be taking my second semester here pretty soon. My main question is can I recover from this at all, and if so how do I do it. Would it be best to retake my classes I scored poorly in or forget them altogether. I’m in dire need of advice.
You could certainly recover from this, it’s only your first year. Speak to your school about retaking the courses and whether that would raise your GPA. But focus on getting better grades from here on out.
Are you in the nursing program or trying to get in (taking your prerequisites)?
If you are already in the nursing program, there is usually a minimum GPA you will need to maintain to stay in the program. Make sure you meet that requirement.
If you are trying to get into your school’s nursing program and admissions are competitive (as they are at most nursing programs), then you need to take a realistic look at your chances. It is almost always possible to re-take classes for a higher grade is necessary.
Chris, it is only the first semester, and you did not say if you are going after an associates or bachelors degree. I would contact the instructors for the courses and see what it is you can do to improve your grades. Sometimes they may allow extra credit work to help your grades. Other than that, look at the courses that you did poorly in, and ask yourself “why did that hapen” and find a way to keep it from happening again.
The 2.0 is just the first semester. Right now your Cumulative GPA is 2.0. If you manage a 2.5 for the next three semesters, that’s a cumulative GPA of 2.375. I would talk to your guidance counselor about this, maybe they have a few more ideas.
