Is it overkill to notify a college of a mistake by e-mail and phone?

I made an error on the CommonApp regarding my mother's profession. While I e-mailed all my schools, how can I be sure that they have put it in my file? Will they typically reply back, or should I just call to confirm they got it?

Wait for them to e-mail back. They’re probably not in right now since a lot of admissions people are away on holiday.

It depends, is it a big issue? Will your error regarding your mother’s profession significantly affect your application? 99.9% of the time, it won’t. Officers just use the information to get a picture of the applicant (e.g. where do they come from?). If you e-mail the offices, I wouldn’t necessarily expect a reply back, but there is a very good chance your file will be corrected. To call over such a small issue probably isn’t necessary. If you feel it is important for the strength of your application, feel free to call. They certainly won’t hold it against you.
