I guess I thought I was better at test taking than I really am.

I got a 157 on the October PSAT. That is equivalent to a 23 on the ACT, almost a 24.

I NEED to get a 30, at the bare miminum.

I'm taking a 2 month Kaplan Course in January, and am Planning to take as many practice tests as possible. I'm also staying in the hardest math, english, and science classes possible.

When I take it in April, and likely again in June, is getting a 30 an obtainable goal? Is it even POSSIBLE?

Strictly speaking it is the equivalent of a 24, not a 23.

But I think it's 'possible', but very unlikely. If you seriously prep, you should expect to improve to a 27-29 ACT. But given that your natural ability without studying yielded only a 23.5, I think it will be very difficult for you to get anything higher than a 29.

The ACT is very different from the SAT, so you may yield very different results for the ACT. For example, my friend scored a 1650 on the SAT, but got a 35 on the ACT.

That's not entirely true. People who are good at logical reasoning tend to do well on the SAT. People who are "book smart" and tend to do well on tests in school etc. tend to do better on the ACT.

But only by 5%tile points maybe 10% at most. If someone has the ability to get a 35 on the ACT, I have no doubt that they could manage a 2000 at least on the SAT. They test basically the same material for math and grammar. Scores shouldn't be that caried.
