Hi, my name is Alyssa. Right now I'm a sophomore is high school. I'm starting to prep for college because I feel like I should always be prepared and have many options. I currently get A's and A-'s. I do get the occasional B, but in my AP classes. I took an AP class freshman year and sort of slacked (got a 2 on the AP exam) and realized just how much structure I have to set up myself. I'm in an AP class this year and am managing to do better now that I know how it's done. I'm from Michigan and don't have a ton of money, or really any at all, to use towards college, so I'd be depending heavily upon scholarships and financial aid. My PLAN results said that I'm expected to get a 26-30 on my ACT. I'm unsure of the exact career I'd like, but I do have a few standards. I'd like to work with children or animals, preferably children. The career also has to be well-paying. I'm think of becoming a child psychiatrist. I'm also considering an orthopedic surgeon, but I'd have to see if I could handle performing surgery on somebody. Now that I've given you some background, I'd like to know my chances of getting into UCLA or NYU. I absolutely adore big cities and I'd love to spend my time at NYU. I'm hoping that I can make it there due to the fact that NYC is my dream city. Could any current students tell me what it's like at any of these colleges and if I have a chance at getting in?

NYU has poor financial aid, and UCLA has none (other than athletic) towards OOS students. What kind of ECs do you have?

Might want to consider City College…

You would have a better chance staying in state. Try to keep up your GPA and test scores. There are many in state college that offer merit scholarship. Top schools not only are difficult to get into, it is difficult to get merit aid. There are need base aid though, but you will have to be accepted first. You should look around for in state public schools like EMU or WMU. I know they offer merit scholarship that is not too difficult to get. But first of all, you need to find out your career path. You may want to review your PLAN result to see if there is any suggestion on it.
