Is it possible for someone who did average in high school to excel in college

and eventually transfer to a better university or will average high school grades kill those chances?

Lets say you were average high school student who didn't do spectacular because you went to a competitive magnet school, but you ended up with a 3.5 GPA during the time of college admissions (started out slow your freshman and sophomore years). Also your SAT score is a 2190. Now you end up going to a tier 3 school for the sake of money and you don't apply to any of the top schools because you know you probably won't get in, while you are at that tier 3 school you end up with a 4.0 GPA for your first two years.

Now you are a student there who has dreams of transferring up to a top notch university because now you have a clean slate and you have managed to get a high GPA. Will your average performance in high school kill your chances of transferring to the following colleges?

Columbia University (dream school).

Yale University (they take transfers but I know the acceptance rate).

University of Pennsylvania.

Cornell University.

Boston College

NYU

Duke

Georgetown

Dartmouth

Brown

Johns Hopkins

Penn State

Ohio State

University of Michigan

University of Connecticut

I currently attend Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia. I attend this college because I really do not have to pay anything for it and currently I am a freshman here. I will probably lose my 4.0 GPA because I will most likely get an A- or B in one class so it may end up as a 3.9 or 3.8. Eitherways, a lot of the seniors at this college say that the first semester is usually the most difficult and if I can make it through there with a good GPA then chances are I will probably have a better GPA as time moves on. The professors have told me that I am a hardworker and some ask me what I am even doing at Armstrong and why I didn't go to a college like Harvard or Princeton. My parents say that after my sophomore year of college they want me to transfer and they will pay for my final two years of college. I also want this for myself.

The reasons for my average GPA in high school include

Learning English late in life (at the age of 12).

Going to a high school which has courses that are honors level and up.

Living in a poor area in general where most of the public schools are torn down and magnet schools are the only option, also an area where opportunities are hard to come by in terms of summer work and what not.

Starting out slow at a magnet high school because of adjusting to a new standard and being at a conflict with myself (I really did not want to live down south).

Anyways guys I want to attend a university in the northeast, one that has a good name to it. I really feel now that I have completely adjusted to life in America and now that I have a clean slate and an equal opportunity, that I will be able to compete with a lot of the kids at the top universities. My goal is to ultimately go to a top grad school like Harvard or Yale.

Also, life here in the south is boring (even in Savannah) and I am not much of a southern guy myself. I love life in the north and I believe going there will give me the best experience for my college years because I will be at a place I like. I am set on transferring and I have talked to a lot of people about it and they agree with my reasons for it. My biology professor has told me that he will be more than happy to write me a recommendation letter if I do plan on transferring to Columbia.

thanks for all help.

You have a really good S.A.T score and since im assuming you’ll be a junior your high school performance won’t be weighed as much.I think you should just apply ,honestly theres no magically number for the ivies. Many kids in my high school got into ivies with wayyyyy lower s.a.t scores than you.I think your competitive and you’ve got a great shot.Go for it

Well I am currently a freshman, after my sophomore year I will be transferring (so I will be a junior at a new college hopefully).

Thanks for the encouraging words.

One thing that is in your favor for U Conn (and probably other state schools) is that you are not evaluated on your high school record once you’ve had two years of college.

If you get a 4.0 you will have a real shot at the Top Schools.

Two tips:

Take the hardest classes available, and get as close to a 4.0 as you can. A 4.0 student who took easy classes looks a lot worse than a 3.9 student who took challenging courses.

Get involved on campus.

Don’t worry, your high school performance will only be a moot point next to a 3.8+ College GPA

I am only a freshman so I don’t know whether the courses I am taking are hard or not. I am involved on campus, I do intramural football and I have accumulated volunteer hours at a local hospital.

I am just asking, is it possible to transfer from a tier 3 school up to an Ivy?

Also as I said, my goal is to try and go to a college in the Northeast for my final two years so please give some more good schools in the Northeast I can go to. I want some good suggestions.

My ultimate goal is to go to Harvard for grad school.

Here’s some encouragement…

**full story found on the thread that bquin linked to

When high school began I was frustrated and fed up, why couldn’t my parents move back to NY and give me the life where I was the top student? I was fed up with their ways so I on purpose tried to fail but a part of me still couldn’t do it. I ended up being a B student my first two years at a difficult magnet high school and I rarely applied myself (I ended up with a 3.1 GPA at the end of my sophomore year). At the end of my junior year that GPA went up to a 3.5, I managed to get ALL A’s in all 5 of the AP classes. I made a 5 on the AP Chemistry exam without even taking the class during the school year (thank you local bookstore!) and I made a 5 on all of my other AP exams except for AP European which I made a 4 on. My weighted GPA was well above a 4.0. I actually ended up doing better than the valedictorian.

Then senior year came around and I made ALL A’s the whole year, I ended up graduating with a 3.7 GPA (unweighted). My SAT score was a 2190 (1520 on the math and reading part, checked it today, I told everyone by accident that it was a 2130).

My parents were proud of me and told me that as a gift, they will take me to NYC for 2 weeks. They did take me there and when I was there, I met a girl who I knew back in middle school. I would always beat her when it came to grades (I was always above her). Well, I asked her where she was going and she told me that she will be attending Yale University, she asked me where I was going and I was speechless. If my parents would have stayed in NYC then I could have attended Yale University (school of my dreams). After hearing her say that I went back to the Hotel we were staying in and when my parents weren’t around I cried…

I looked up at the ceiling and said: “god, why did you send me down there to live with a bunch of morons who hated me because I was ethnically different? Why couldn’t you just have given me a regular life?”

My dad calls my name and then he comes in and sees me crying…
He says the following to me:

“I know you, you are the kid who graduated at the top of his class in elementary school and made the best and brightest look average. I know you, you are the kid who put up with the most brutal racist treatment and put up with the most racist kids but yet managed to walk on both legs. You went to a good high school with good kids but son the environment outside of it was hell itself. Son, I know you think its your fault but its not, it was my fault and as a father I beg for your forgiveness. I know that I should have kept you in NYC but I was too lured by the low cost of living down south. I know that I should have done better as a father, I know that you wanted to get into Yale. Look, you do good your first two years of college and then transfer for your final two years, I will pay 600k if I have to so you can attend Yale. I know you deserve it more than any other kid…”

I still remember that long speech. Right now I am a freshman at Armstrong Atlantic and I have a 4.0 GPA. I hope my dream of attending Yale University comes true…
I hope that I get to attend Yale or Columbia, because after all I have been through, the good lord could at least give me a chance to compete with those kids. I have a boulder on my shoulder…

I was accepted into

Armstrong Atlantic
Georgia State
UNC Asheville
Penn State University (University Park)
Pace University
George Mason
James Madison
and University of Oklahoma.

Out of state tuition was high, didn’t get many scholarships and my family was in a tight situation due to the recession…

My mom and dad told me that they were proud of my 4.0 GPA and that they are doing all they can to research ways of getting me into Columbia or Yale…

Schools I want to transfer to

Yale
Columbia
Cornell
Brown
Dartmouth
Georgetown
NYU
Boston College
Boston University
Ohio State
U Conn
Carnegie Mellon
and UPenn

basically any school in the Northeast, I am obsessed with that region. I hope I get to live there one day because heck, a year in the Bronx is better than a week in Hicktown (no offense to anyone).

since you will be applying for Junior year, I’d reckon they’ll look at your college credentials more. if you make a good case for transferring and explain the list that you’ve provided for not ‘doing so well in HS’ , and get a stellar GPA, i’d say you have a shot. All the best and I hope to see you as one of our success stories! i’m striving to be one myself ;-)
