...to get in if they are hispanic and have a weighted gpa of 3.6?
My EC's really focused on depth, rather than breadth (the most prominent EC's being 15 or 16 years of piano and 9 years of martial arts).

I hate to break it to you, but I just don’t see it happening… there are plenty of very academically qualified Hispanic applicants applying to Harvard.

Thanks for being honest. I will still apply, since the only way to be 100% sure that I will be rejected is if I don’t apply at all.

Just curious though, ARE hispanics qualified as URM’s at Harvard (or any other Ivy for that matter)?

YES!
10 char

Hispanics are considered URMs and I would definitely say it’s worth applying

Sorry, Hispanics are the ‘overrepresented’ URMs- that is, there are increasing numbers of very qualified Hispanics applying (700+ on SAT I and IIs plus 3.9 GPA). Multiple states are feeding the number of applications, as well as the increased advertisement of Harvard’s generous financial aid.

The EC of piano would require national or regional awards to be a hook, although the 15 years does demonstrate a passion.

Other than NYSSMA (regional awardl), the only National Awards I have for the piano are from Piano guild. I would post a lot more of my EC’s, but I didn’t want to make it look like a grocery list of things that I’ve done.

It’s still helps more than being white or asian though

Definitely. It’s just not as strong a hook as Native-American or Afr-American.

After filling out the common app for this (and many other schools), I found out Harvard needs 2 SAT II’s ALONG with my ACT scores (I don’t plan to submit SAT I’s). I know they don’t have a minimum requirement, but my SAT II’s are abysmal. I thought that if you sent the ACT, you didn’t have to submit the SAT II’s…?

No, you are required to submit two SAT II scores. The ACT does not replace this.

Definitely try, but your chances aren’t the best. Take the SAT IIs again in November if possible - if you can take the ACT again, do it.

That is the policy at many schools, but each college can decide what they want sent and H requires SAT IIs even if the ACT is submitted.

Regarding admissions to selective colleges like H, the competition is extremely tough, even within URM applicants. These schools usually only give leeway for gpa and test scores if the URM applicant has overcome adversity (eg. low income, first gen, underserved HS, etc.). And even then, they will not admit students who they don’t think can succeed. If you haven’t already, visit the Hispanic Students subforum (under Admissions), there’s lots of valuable information and experienced members there.

You might stand a good chance if you are also economically disadvantaged. :)
