hey! I’m currently a freshie+ in an MT BFA program, and am just wondering if there are others who have made being an RA as an MT work, and why or why not. I tend to hear answers ranging from not ideal to downright impossible, but honestly, I’m just trying to do as much as I can to spend as little $$$ on school, yknow?
My son’s BFA program specifically discouraged it because you put in a lot of long nights in theater and these may clash with your required on duty nights as an RA. My D, an education major who was an R for 3 1/2 years, counseled against it for the same reason. My son did work as an overnight desk aide a couple of overnights a week and made some spending money, but, unfortunately, he didn’t get the free room and partial board my D got.
It really depends on the school and the requirements. Years ago, when I was a BFA major (let’s just say DECADES) and a RA, I had 1 8-hour desk shift a week and I scheduled it for midnight - 8 am to make sure I didn’t miss rehearsals or class or performances. That can be hard to do but I have never been an 8-hour-a-night sleeper. I also had to have 8 hours a week “office hours” but I would change it each week on a sheet outside my room based on my availability. Sometimes, Sunday 5-10 were 5 of my hours
One of my MT students JUST applied for this at his school for next fall. He discussed it with his RA and they are a nursing major with odd schedules (clinicals, etc.) They told him as long as he could commit to the number of hours per week to be available, they are usually flexible with that. I know other schools are not as flexible.
There are BFA MT and Acting majors at Roosevelt CCPA who are RA’s. Since it is a city campus, they have security personnel at the desks, not RA’s. The rehearsal spaces are just a few minutes from the dorms, so getting back and forth is quick and easy. I suggest you read your school’s RA job requirements thoroughly and discuss it with your MT advisor. Then be honest with yourself about whether you are a good student with strong organizational, time management, and people skills! My son was an RA as an instrumental performance major at an intense music conservatory. It worked out fine for him, and it saved a big chunk of money.
