Is it possible to be involved in theater as a non-Tischie?

I really love NYU, but I don't want to study theater at Tisch (too pre-professional, I want an academic study of theater if I decide to study it). I don't think NYU has a theater minor, which is OK as long as I can have at least some extracurricular involvement in design and tech for the stage.

Are there student-run theater groups that put on good productions and use talent from the other schools? (Social work, CAS and gallatin would apply to me mostly).

ANOTHER QUESTION - can Gallatin kids take classes at Tisch??

yeah, CAST (cas theater) does student-run productions, but also allows interested students from other schools

You can participate in extra-curric theatre groups, like CAST and SCHMUTZ but not Tisch productions. Gallatin kids can take courses in the Open Arts curriculum at Tisch for non-majors but you can't take any classes which Drama majors take.

what about GSPers?

Matt1288 where are most of the people that attend NYU from?

any from Minnesota?

sorry i forgot to add from in post 5

There's the Dramatic Literature, Theatre History, and Cinema program in CAS, which according to the website, is both a major and a minor.

I'm in the same situation. I'm a Photography & Imaging major in Tisch, and I'm not allowed to double-major or major-minor in both that and Drama within Tisch (which would've been ideal), so I'm going for the above CAS second major or minor (I haven't decided) and looking to be involved with CAST.

That sounds like a good plan. I was interested in that as a major for a while but I have a friend at NYU who told me the department has a reputation for lots of kids who didn't get into Tisch at first, transferred to NYU, and are still trying to manage a cross-departmental transfer into the "real" drama program.

It might be a great minor though. I'm becoming more and more interested in NYU.

The Dramatic Lit major/minor in CAS is not a performance/practical based program, it's a history based program. Ren, although there may be a couple people who fit the description of not getting into Tisch and then transferring into that major with the hopes of then interanlly transferring into Tisch, I've never heard of it happening. Internal transfers into Drama are very rare and for people who are already transfers into another college at NYU, it pretty much never happens because they'd end up having to stay at NYU for too many years in order to complete all the requirements. If you want a major in history of Dramatic Lit. and theatre, the CAS program is fine, and you can audition for CAST productions, although there aren't many and usually there are a lot of people auditioning.

How about for dance? Any dance classes (not student run) for non-Tisch students?

matth - so is there a lot of student run theatre or not? If CAST doesn't put on a lot of shows, would you recommend NYU for a person who wants to participiate (not necessarily study) theatre, just not at Tisch?
