Is it possible to change my major before CalSO??

Ok, here's the deal:

When I was applying to the UC's my parents really pushed me into applying with as an Engineering major. I really had no interest in the field, but they are pretty persuasive and made it seem like a good career choice.

Now I really regret it and have FINALLY convinced them to let me major in what I'm interested in. I'd like to switch to Environmental Economics and Policy in the College of Natural Resources.

My question: is it possible to change my major before school starts in the fall? Or maybe before CalSO, so I can pick the classes I need for the EEP major?

Please advise :(

Probably not.

Taken from CalSO's FAQs:

I want to change colleges. Can I sign up for a different college's CalSO session? Can I change colleges at CalSO?
Change of college cannot be considered until you start school. You must attend a CalSO session for the specific college to which you were admitted.

This is possible with other colleges, but definitely not CoE from what I've been told.

it's not even possible with other colleges...
I'm trying to get out of L&S b4 CalSo and they said I'd have to stay in for 1st semester at least, then switch.

So when I'm picking classes at CalSo should I just pick classes that satisfy my EEP major (even though I'll technically still be an Engineering major)? So I won't get behind or anything...

Yes, it is possible with other colleges...

I know because I did it myself!

I think it's possible with the College of Chemistry.

Then again, CoC is not for the feint of heart.

@Going the Distance....
Did you switch out of College of Natural Resources?! Thanks!

Ok...so maybe it's possible if you're switching around in other colleges. But I know for a fact that with L&S it's definitely not possible until 1st semester's over.

Yeah you should still take classes that pertain to the major you plan on going into...

Wow, we have an eerily similar situation.

So I also got in as an engineering major (persuasion from my friend actually, rather than parents). But I changed my mind in the next few months and sent an email asking whether or not I could change my major before CalSO and the answer was no.

I wanted to switch out also into the College of Natural Resources initially as an Environmental Economics and Policy major like yourself but changed my mind about that, too and am now an Environmental Sciences major.

To circumvent the hardships of being in the College of Engineering, I talked to my engineering advisor and petitioned for a non-engineering Fall schedule. Then for Spring semester, I had to petition once again and this time, actually had to get approval in person from the Dean of Engineering herself. It wasn't too bad but it was bothersome.

Finally, last month, I think the CoE had had enough of me and asked if there was any way I could transfer into CNR soon and so I met with the Environmental Sciences advisor in CNR and we got all the paperwork settled and I was officially in a few weeks later!

To make things short, just talk to your assigned engineering advisor. You'll receive that information at CalSO if you haven't already. They might make you wait at least a semester (they want to see that you can get a minimum 3.0 GPA before transferring) and then make arrangements with your engineering advisor and your major advisor (for EEP, it's Gail Vawter).

Good luck!

@xpeachpleasurex: No, I switched out of Letters & Sciences.

@PassionateOpera: Yes, it is possible to switch out of Letters & Sciences before CalSO. I know because I did it!
