Hi guys,

I'm a HS senior accepted ar UCR and planning to attend in the fall. My stats werent good enough for UCLA or UCSD so I was wondering is it possible to finish my lower breadth requirements at UCR then transfer to LA or SD? I know they give first priority to Comm. Coll. students then 4 year university students but everyone has told me its hard if not damn near impossible. It can be done right??? No one ever talks about moving from one Uc to another.....the only reason i want to is that i am majoring in econ and i want to transfer to la or sd because i feel they have stronger undergrad programs as well as I hear firms heavily recruit from those campuses (La Jolla etc.)......I'm not bashing UCR its a good school i mean its a UC after all....I'm just saying.....I'm trying to see if I can get into the schools i REALLY want to once I finish gen ed stuff.

ey man i want to do the same thing that you were talking about execpt i wanna do biomedical enginnering.....um i have heard of transfering between UC's iono why people say it is imppossible. ....some might say that you should go to a CC but then it wont have the same affect on you if you started at a university......ehhh ya can some one who actually did this please help us both!?

yea same here i wanna transfer bioengineering/biomedical engineering. My friends and his sister both did it. They transfer from UCR to UCSD.

uh they give priority to community college students in california. why didnt you just try harder in high school so you could get into ucsd the first time through? if you're really wanting to go to a better uc community college is the way to go...why would you want to go to UCR first where you would be wasting money...it's not impossible just not every likely...you would have be pretty damn 1337 at UCR to transfer which once again I doubt would be easy or else you wouldnt be attending the school in the first place..

hi jackroo, the information ilovelarkin provided is not accurate. you don't have to be "pretty damn 1337" at ucr to transfer, whatever the heck that means. and since you are considering transferring, it is highly possible for you if you carry through with your plans. it is easier to transfer from cc to ucsd/ucla. i understand that you want something to fall back on (riverside) in case you screw up at a cc.
i think it's pretty easy to transfer into sd, just have to maintain a 3.5 or higher. good luck and hope that helps =)

Thanks for the advice worried senior I want the UC experience and I believe that a CC won't be a good environment for me. As in it would be harder for me to be motivated to study really hard because thats who I am. It helps in my case to be in an atmosphere that encourages critical thinking and reasoning ie using my brain so I would be less prone to become lazy. I'm just saying that at RCC the cc in my area is notorious for people staying there and not transferring out and I do not want to put myself in that situation (I don't have the greatest willpower I admit)....and ILoveLarkin I don't think its fair just to say try harder in high school. In my case it was a number of factors as in being bogged down by EC's...taking WAAAY too many AP classes....and yes being a bit on the lazy side but when it came down to the AP Exams I always came through which didn't reflect my work ethic and study habits. I paid the price for being a sleep at the wheel, and that coupled with the extremely high sreq's to get into LA or SD this year make me want to work my butt off at UCR so i can prove to myself I'm worthy as UCSD or LA material and not someone who didn't deserve to ge in because of weak academics.

it'll be harder to transfer from a UC to another UC but its as hard as people make it out to be. The admittance rate between intercampus and CCC to UC's are only marginally different. Just aim for a 3.5+ and you'll be fine. However, UCR is not exactly a place that promotes study; try to stay focused and don't fall into partying and morongo.

That won't be as hard seeing as I'm not dorming for the first year at least....(studying in the library ftw!)....worried senior.....google leetspeak......or 13375p34k and u will know what 1337 means in the context of what larkins tryin to say.

well, if your not dorming there goes your college experience! studying in the library also helps.

yeah true I realize that but when i transfer then I will dorm so even though my college experience will be cut short I think its worth it.

well, just stay motivated and do well.
I was in your situation 2 years ago.
UCR with money vs UCSB vs UCI vs community college.

I choose UCR because I didn't want to go any of the schools but i wanted to save my parents money. I wanted the whole college experience and a safety valve, so community college was out of the question.

So you chose UCR with a scholarship they gave you??? Are you dorming at UCR now? Yeah free money can be very hard to pass on considering the price of a UC education these days...just going to a UC and not necessarily dorming is imo still a part at least of the experience because u have forgone the CC route.

ROFL. that's the first time i've met someone that doesnt know what 1337 is. hahaha

i dormed the first year and i'm living in an apartment this year.

Guess he doesnt "game" at all lol......yep damn us kids with our l33t h4x and video games.....Ah i see......where do u live if u dont mind me asking...somewhere in downtown riverside close to campus?

i live less than a mile away from campus, it takes me about 10 - 20 minutes to walk to class (depending where its located)

Ah i see interesting....how much is it monthly....do they skin u?.....do u live alone?

it varies, i live in a terrible apartment place. its dirty had some roaches etc... didn't put much thought into picking it, i thought it wouldn't be too bad because the sample room they showed me was alright. The apartment only has some students, so most of the neighboors are locals (which sucks ass) The only pro is that this apartment place is DIRT cheap. rent for my 2bdr 1 bath = rent for a 1 bd 1 bath at a luxury apartment place such as the towers. However, i'd definitely pay more for a better place since this place just blows.

are u fools goin to UCR im deciding between UCR and Calpoly bioengineering. Tell me were u guys think i should go. If i go to UCR we should lan it.

I don't know what ILoveLarkin's problem is. Frankly I don't think anyone should be expected to do well in a typical highschool setting, unless of course your planning a career in swallowing ********.

I was a major flake in highschool, cut tons of classes, failed all but PE in my senior year, but by some miracle I got myself into UCSC. I decided UC Berkeley was the place to be though, so I set about transfering. I made several mistakes about which classes I should have taken, but I never slacked off. I maintained a 3.8+, and I was admitted to the UCB School of Engineering. My current roommate I met at UCSC, and he transfered up here too.

It's not typically encouraged or easy, but it's actually quite reasonable. I'm hearing people say GPA of 3.5+, but CC students do get priority. I would focus on keeping it above 3.7 if you want to be safe. Really the necessary GPA depends on how competitive applications for your major are. Also, apply to a few campuses. For some reason UC Davis didn't accept me for transfer, but UCB, UCLA, and UCSD did. Finally, just talk to advisors as much as possible.
