I am a prospective student, and I know I want to go to medical school but I also have a passion for economics and policy. I know I can major in anything as long as I complete the pre med requirements, but I have heard PAM is very rigorous. Will it be possible to maintain a 3.5+ with pre med classes, and is it even possible to do PAM and pre med at the same time?

You should look at econ curriculum and see how much more difficult it is to pack premed courses into your schedule. Generally premed are bio majors because it’s just more natural that way to take premed classes and not pile on on workload. It would be easier for premed to go to a decent grade inflation undergrad, like Brown, and get good gpa for med school. But it’s your choice.

Would it kill my GPA to do PAM and pre med at the same time? And will I be able to graduate in 4 years?

You can kind of tell how you stack up against competition by where you stand in your SAT scores and how well you score on math/science APs and SATs. But ppl tend to become more focused and studious in college to make sure they make good grades. You never really know if you could handle it until you have tried after the first semester. But even then you may have ups and owns all through college. I did well freshman and junior year and not so much sophomore and senior year. Taking 3 or more science/math classes definitely took a toll on me.

Maybe you can take transfer classes at a community college one summer to make your school year easier. Again if you can handle the workload, you can graduate in 4 years. If not, I say it’s more important to focus on your GPA than graduating in 4 years. But I know that would be costly. Maybe then just graduate with econ and finish 1 or 2 premed requirements at your state university as a non-degree seeking student.
