If I get into Northwestern next year, I want to study biological sciences, but I've also been really involved in Journalism and I don't just want to drop it. Is it possible for me to double major even if one is in the Medill School of Journalism and the other is in Weinberg? I eventually want to attain a MD/MPH degree.

I was also looking at the minor in Global Health Studies and the classes in the curriculum sound very interesting (especially since I eventually want to go into International Public Health). Perhaps I should just pursue a different, non-science degree and just take the required classes for med school and a minor in Global Health?

I'd appreciate your thoughts and opinions.

P.S. I realize that my grammar is probably atrocious, but I don't have time to look over this post right now! :)

If you are accepted to Medill, then you can double major in Weinberg; however, if you apply and are accepted to Weinberg you can’t double major in another college without first doing an internal transfer.

From what I’ve heard, Medill is very intense; not the kind of thing you get a degree in just because you don’t want to drop journalism. If you still want to do journalism activities, there are lots of student publications on campus (including the Daily Northwestern, which has apparently won a lot of prizes) that you can participate in.

If you really want to pursue the degree in journalism, I would recommend talking to an advisor and current students and see what they think. Biological sciences is also an intense major, so I would imagine that putting those two together would be very difficult (although probably doable if you’re very determine).

But this is just my opinion. I highly recommend that you seek out other opinions, especially if/when you get to campus. But don’t sweat it; you still have lots of time to decide. :)

Good luck!

Yes, you can double-major in two schools. However, you will receive one degree (based on the professional school you are enrolled in). The Bienen School of Music allows double bachelor’s degrees because of the breadth and specialization required for music majors.

I see. Writing for the Daily Northwestern sounds wonderful, and I wouldn’t have to be pursuing a journalism degree to participate, correct?

Are there any pre-meds in this forum who I can talk to? I’d love to talk to them about their experience so far, and see what they’re majoring/minoring in, etc.

Correct. Anyone can contribute to the Daily.
