I'm most likely going to Liberty University, starting fall 2014. Would it be possible to double major and double minor - and have a life? If I did, I would major in biomedical science and English, and I would minor in photography and either cinematic arts or writing.

You’d have to check with your school to find out if you’re allowed to do that. I know a family friend just graduated from Liberty this past spring as a double major in math and biology, but I don’t know their exact policies as far as multiple majors and minors go.

If you’re allowed to do that, talk with advisers and do some digging yourself to see if you can actually do those majors and minors. Just because you might be allowed to and be able to fit things in unit-wise doesn’t mean that you’ll automatically be able to fit all the classes in the amount of time you want to graduate in. Required classes might be offered irregularly or only once a year, for instance. If that’s the case (or if you’re not allowed to have the major/minor), remember that you can always just take a lot of classes in certain areas without declaring a major or minor in them.

As for having a life, if you manage your time well you should be fine. I’m a double major in CS and linguistics, and I still have a life. Of course, that’s without minors. :)

Just out of curiosity, what are your plans with that major/minor combination?

Well, I want to go to medical school…ultimately, I want to be an oncologist. But I’m really passionate about photography, writing, and filmmaking!

Why not just major in English, take the required pre-med courses (or double major in biomedical if you really want to) and take elective courses in photography, writing, and filmmaking? You’d get much more enjoyment and knowledge from taking a few specific classes in the areas your interested in and not be forced into additional classes that are required for the minors.

A minor doesn’t really mean much. What matters is what you get from the courses you take. Especially in things like photography, writing and filmmaking which are fields that don’t require college training to work in those fields.

If you could only do one, which would you do?

Now, what would be the downside of only majoring in that one and taking a bunch of electives in the others?
