I applied for ECE at CIT and was accepted. But I've been toying with the idea of getting a CS degree as well and I've decided I would like to. However many questions arise, such as:

1) Will I still be able to graduate in 4 years (8 Semesters, I need the FA badly and plan to internship/co-o so summer's are out of the question) without destroying myself and graduating as a zombie?

2) Do I have to pay extra for tuition?

3) I understand the SCS is the hardest part of CMU to get into, so will it be easy for me to get CS as my double major since ECE is already related to CS?

Or is it even necessary to double major? Would taking the more software oriented ECE path suit me just as well?

yes you can do it, yes you can do it in 4 years. no it will not cost you any extra. ECE requires concepts and 15-213, and 15-210 is an option as are upper cs courses such as 15-410. This means a fair amount of overlap, and an easy way to make your case for getting into scs.

I would say it is not necessary to double major (just do cs, duh), but i have a few friends who started out in ece and are now doing both

Yes it is indeed possible. My roommate is actually doing that. One word of advice. It is much easier to start off as ECE and double into CS than it is to start off as CS and double into ECE. A lot of courses required for an ECE major can count for CS credit but not the other way around.

Granted, I hope you know what you’re getting into. There are quite a few people that do it but as long as you have a grasp on what the workload will be like and not just walking into it blind.

I posted the same question last year-- was accepted ECE, SCS and MCS-math.

I had taken intro to ece in pre college and was pumped.
After taking 18240 I realized i really didn’t want to be an ece major and scs and math were my thing…but it’s totally doable.

Go to the major requirements and map out your first two years – even easier if you got a ton of AP credits- which I’m guessing you probably do like most of us.

Take 18100 first semester -intro to ece. Weeder course–be ready.

You can always just major in ECE and get a minor in CS. I know a few people that did that and were still able to get job offers with CS-centric companies. And, really, by just minoring you can focus only on taking the classes you’re really interested in in CS and skip some of the killer classes.
