Hi I just got admitted into the school of arts and sciences for economics at IU. I am also very interested in finance, so I wanted to ask if it would be possible to dual major in economics and finance at IU?
Thanks,
To do the Finance major you will need to get admitted to the Kelley School of Business. I am assuming that you are not a Direct Admit to Kelley so your Freshman year you will have to take the necessary pre-requisites and meet the GPA requirements for Kelley. You could double major but it could depend on whether you are coming in with AP credits already.
@MAsecondtimer you are correct, I am not a direct admit to Kelley. I do not do AP because my school only offers the IB, I am currently doing the IB and IU does award credit for it. Hopefully that would help me achieve my goal. Do you think that it is very difficult to complete the prerequisite courses for Kelley and also obtain at least a 3.5 GPA in Freshman year? What other ways can I get exposure to Kelley, and finance courses and opportunities, from the school of Arts and sciences?
Thanks alot for your response, I appreciate it!
The easiest path would probably be to major in economics and get a business minor through Kelley. You would be learning a lot of the same concepts as the finance major. It will definitely require a lot of work to meet the standard admit requirements to Kelley, and I’m not sure how well the courses would line up with finance.
You might try calling/emailing the Kelley advising office. If you tell them you are a prospective student, they might be able to answer some questions:

Thanks @iubaccounting, this was really helpful
So back in my day it was very popular to Major in Finance and Minor in Econ. The overlaping concepts made it pretty easy to do both.
Just so you know, there are only 2 answers to every finance question:
- It depends
- That’s not our field, it’s economics.
