is it possible to get into mit with poor freshman year grades?

in my freshman year of highschool my average was an 86. I was 12 at the time and it took me a while to get used to the way that my school worked, so my grades suffered, but in the following year my average increased to a 92.5, and is going up in my junior year. do you think i can still be admitted?

extra stuff:

black male from nyc
15 when applying
many extra curriculars

people are looking at this but not replying… please

Is it possible? I would believe so. But as MITChris tells everyone, not even he can predict who will get in. If you are challenging yourself and your grades are going up, that tells MIT something about how well you will perform there. It will also depend on your test scores and most importantly, how you have challenged yourself in and outside the classroom.

Just remember that your whole life is ahead of you and it does not hinge on whether you get into MIT or not. It hinges on what you make of your opportunities.

You’re young, which makes your case unusual. I think transitioning into high school at such a young age is a fine excuse for low scores, as long as you can prove by the time you apply that you are academically prepared for MIT. This is particularly important because, again, you’re young. Make sure you do exciting, challenging things that you are passionate about, in and out of your classes.

Absolutely. I had both a D & C on my transcript and still got into MIT.
I’m from NYC as well.

I think 2014MIT might be a ■■■■■. Or maybe not, who knows.

yeah that was also my first thought (i was going to say obvious ■■■■■ is obvious)

Not a ■■■■■, don’t worry. I can provide you any details you want. I won’t have it until this spring, but I’ll even upload a photo of my brass rat with my username if it would make you feel happy.

Lidusha, were you at ring delivery? Remember all the sororities girls up front doing chants and the long line that went by the student center? Also the kid that yelled out “I liked the other one” when the real ring was displayed?

I will clarify that those grades were from my freshmen year. There weren’t extenuating circumstances but I was all Bs and As from that point forward.

Okay, I’m convinced. You are hereby not a ■■■■■. :p

I was not at ring delivery, but I did hear about the sorority girls. What dorm do you live in?

@2014MIT I’m glad to have finally found someone who got in with poor freshman grades! Everywhere I look, there are posts of “inspirational stories” about people with perfect GPAs and low SAT scores getting into their dream schools, but it seems nobody has success stories about low GPA, high SAT students. Hopefully my hard work to improve my GPA as you did will pay off when decisions come out!

Or maybe he just hangs out at MIT in order to gather info to make his ■■■■■■■■ more believable…Remember, MIT ■■■■■■ are better and smarter than the average ■■■■■.

Or reads isawyou.mit.edu/

^This site is AWESOME !!

Okay. So I posted here to encourage a possible applicant. If you want to think I’m a ■■■■■, go for it. To further fuel your fire, I’ll add: I got in early with those grades! But seriously, I actually did get in early.
