Is it possible to get into stanford without SAT II Math IIC?

I'm a junior and I'm only in algebra 3 right now, I've looked at the Math IIC test and there's no way I'd be able to do OK on it at all. It's way beyond my level. However, on the Stanford website they say they STRONGLY RECOMMEND taking that Math IIC test... What should I do? Would be OK to take Math IC and do really well on it?

i applied early without taking any SAT IIs if that helps.

Well, u must be exceptionally good at EVERYTHING else and have perfect SAT's. I'm not perfect....

id say that its necessary to take SAT II's to get into Stanford. That doesn't mean that all acceptees take them, nor does it mean they have done well on them. If you don't take them, there appears to be a gaping hole in your application. You might be able to get away with not taking IIC, but definitely take 2 others (obviously not writing because they are phasing it out). Also, dont think that SAT II Math I C is a replacement for IIC, cuz IC is almost exactly the same as SAT I Math.

Heh... well what if I was planning on taking them? I had to use that last test date to take the SAT Is.

"Also, dont think that SAT II Math I C is a replacement for IIC, cuz IC is almost exactly the same as SAT I Math."

Can u explain that a little further...

I have heard IC is a joke compared to Sat I math, and a huge joke compared to IIC, so push yourself and go for IIC.

Hey-

I had the same question (I took Math IC) and the admissions officer I spoke with told me it was fine. He said Stanford really stresses not making students take tests specifically for Stanford. IIC is ideal, but he said that they won't hold the IC test "against me," if you know what I mean. HTHS

What I meant by IC is the same as SAT I Math is that they feature almost exactly the same type of questions. The hardest question on IC will be of the same difficulty level as the hardest question on SAT I Math, and neither test will cover anything past Algebra, whereas IIC covers further concepts. So basically, it doesnt demonstrate any further understanding of mathematical concepts to an adcom if you take IC, unless your score is much higher than your SAT I Math score. They "Strongly Recommend" taking IIC because its a different, and for the most part, harder, kind of math that a Stanford acceptee "should" know. But there are exceptions to every rule, so dont break a sweat if you didn't take IIC.

IIC is so hard

I was never aware of this. so let me get this straight.. there is an SAT I MATH, SAT MATH IC and SAT MATH IIC?

Yep.. but the college board just changed things up again:

SAT I (math)
SAT II level 1 - previously called "IC"
SAT II level 2 - previously called "IIC"

oh, and in case you were wondering, the C from SAT II Math II"C" stands for calculator. In other words, you need a calculator to be do some of the problems on SAT II math, whereas you don't "need" a calculator to do SAT I Math, but you would be either a fool or a frickin genius to take the test without one. This kind of contradicts my earlier point, but for the most part SAT II Level 1 (IC) is pretty much the same as SAT I Math.

i certainly hope its possible, cause I didn't take it.

Soo... i could take either math I or Math IC? which is better? math iC?

no, you HAVE to take the SAT I's which has a verbal and a math section, and additionally you are "strongly recommended" to take SAT 2's. In terms of math, you can either take SAT2 Math IC or SAT2 Math IIC. I would recommend taking IIC since it is what Stanford wants.

run4fun, too bad i can't .. that level of math is way beyond anything i've ever been taught. unless i took trig/precal over the summer (and understood every little bit of it) there's no way i'd do well on that test ! lol

Masha, I hope you have some other back-up schools on you list.

Did you apply to Stanford? I mean, if your applying to one, arguably THE, best school in the country, how can you not be able to do that kind of math?

run4fun, not every1 is good at math!!! some ppl might be good at the arts and stuff but not math and science (too bad i am not balanced). i am alright with math and science, but when it comes to verbal, it's murderous! I have already been in canada for over 5 years and i still can't get past 600v SAT I, i am such a disgrace :(. but if you ask me to do math, i'll get high 700s. i am just saying it depends on the person's situation right?
