Is it possible to get more aid at Fullerton at this point?

I could not find anything on Fullertons web site but this is from Cal Poly’s. Since this is also a Cal State I would think Fullerton would also replace the University grant with the Cal grant.

State University Grant (SUG)

SUG is a state funded program that provides money to assist with state university fees. SUG is available to both undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a first degree who are California residents and have financial aid eligibility*. If you receive other grants designated to pay university fees, such as the Cal Grant, your SUG will be replaced by those grants.

Unfortunately Cal States do not give as much aid as the UCs. We have a sophomore at Cal Poly and a sophomore at UC Davis so I am talking from experience.

Your sister may not know that CSU doesn’t meet need for room and board like the UCs do. If you had got into a UC you would have it covered except for student expected summer and school year earnings. Max Calgrant A for CSU is 5,472, so you can’t get anything more there.

Work study still means you have to find an available jobs that qualify under work study. That is good to get it because you usually have first pick at jobs. But even without it you can get a job on your own. Look at what is available on campus and in the surrounding area. But you can email them and ask for a W/S award. In the email ask if there are any CSU fullerton grants to help you close the gap. Otherwise you can borrow 4k more as mentioned above, or you will have to start at CC.

^OMG, it costs this much to go to CSU. Unbelievable. I pay roughly that for my kid at UC.

Call housing and ask to speak to a housing director. Explain your financial situation and ask if you can have a cheaper apt.

That sounds like a scholarship to me. The Army sometimes does offer them, when they have a quota to fill, even at the beginning of freshman year. However, it is not a matter of simply signing up. The student does have legal obligations to the military, and is required to meet relatively demanding physical fitness requirements.

Although the military calls these “scholarships,” in truth they are more like loans – you pay the military back… with your time. At least four years in the military, following graduation.

I asked my friend if she can send me how much aid she is getting because she is getting around 18.3k? around that area. So ill see if there is a possibility if thats can happen to me :3

Thanks for helping me up to this point I’ll update it with my situation when there is more options.

It’s ridiculous that r&b costs that much in relation to tuition. If it has to be that way then low income kids should be strongly encouraged to commute to their local csu

Nothing wrong with going to CC.

Maybe your friend has a work/study award. You can ask for one and on paper you will magically have 18k,. But you still have to find a job and work at it and get that money through a paycheck each week. Otherwise you don’t really get it. You don’t get handed that money.

Are you close enough to the area to look for off campus housing? My mother used to rent a room to a cal poly student for 550 per month which was furnished and included utilities, That would be 4500 to 6500 a year. It might be more expensive around CSUF it is a denser area. And if you don’t have a car it might be hard to find something close enough. But just a thought.

CSU financial aid policy strongly favors commuter students, since the financial aid is not adjusted for resident students (unlike at UC). A student who attends a local CSU will save about $8,000 (in actual costs; if the parents fully subsidize the living at home costs that are usually estimated at around $4,000 to $5,000, then the apparent difference can be around $12,000 to $13,000).

Cal State Apply | CSU; is the CSU net price calculator. The OP may want to check whether the actual financial aid matches that estimate. Others can play with it to check different scenarios to see what CSU financial aid policy looks like.

CSU admission and financial aid policy already encourages that (local area preferences in admissions, and financial aid policy as described above).

Of course, there are some students for whom commuting to the local CSU is impractical, such as the local CSU not having their intended major, or the local CSU being too selective even with local area preferences (e.g. CPSLO), or the local CSU still being too far away to be a reasonable commute (e.g. HSU, CSUC).

@jijggypoo‌-You are 30 miles from Fullerton: how long is the commute if you decide to live at home?

Makes sense. If a csu doesn’t have a local low income student’s major, he should be able to go to a local cc, to make sure of major, and then get funding for last two years

@ucbalumnus‌ Hey, I was just using that right now. I was still looking up ways on getting help online.
COA is $23507.

@madison85 Well in the morning when my dad drove me it was like 45 minute drive and after school… well it can be relentless 1hour 10 minute? Maybe an hour. I dont have a car either :/

Well I check and she has Pell/SEOG/State Uni Grant/ and Cal Grant B Access Grant Award. and the 2 loans. but her EFC is higher then mine :<

Are you male or female? There are rooms for rent right now on craigslist, but some you would have to rule out because it is a short drive. However there are places you could get to by bike. This would make a big difference in cost. I see a share with private room for $500 - 5 min by car, 25 min walking so you could bike it in 10 or 15min. Female preferred. Also there is male only must be csuf student 500 starts in August 10 to 15 min walk. This will save you thousands and you will have ability to keep your own milk and cereal and go on low or no meal plan. I think you need to get on it and snap something up.

Jij…read the explanations above. Your sister goes to a UC. The need based funding for the UCs is HIGHER than for the Cal States. This explains why your sister has sufficient funding to cover living costs…and you do not.

BrownParent…I’m not sure this student has enough money for any source to pay $500 a month to rent a room.

As noted by others…if you can commute to Fullerton, that will save you the money, and your aid will cover most of your costs.

Ok…you will need about 7000 to pay for tuition and books.

you need to find some kind of housing/food for 10k per year. call Housing tomorrow, talk to a director and explain your situation…see if you can get placed in a double apt.
