Is it possible to get more aid at Fullerton at this point?

@thumper‌1 if you are talking about the post I made above. That is a cal state Fullerton student freshmen this year

@mom2collegekids thank you for thw suggestion.I will be doing so on monday!

This is a one year thing aswell hopefully next uear ill have license, drive DECENTLY, and a car than this will be over.

“It’s ridiculous that r&b costs that much in relation to tuition.”

I think the R&B charges at most schools are totally ridiculous, and California is an expensive place to live so they can justify the higher costs. D2’s charge is over $13000/yr in cheapo Florida. It was just raised for this year, less than 6 weeks before school starts. For 4 months, it’s $2800 for meals. I don’t spend half that for my entire family, including eating out. I understand a premium, but 5x what she would spend if she were cooking for herself? There is no ‘lesser’ option either (D1 could choose a 12 meal/wk plan that is $1000 cheaper). I told her she will be eating absolutely every meal in that dining room.

wow…so the school charges 5600 per school year for meal plan alone? that is crazy. I thought my kids’ frosh plan was crazy (frosh year meal plan is around 3500 or so…after frosh year, no plan is reqd)

for decades, schools like CSU had few dorms because most students were commuters. I grew up just a few mile away from CSUF…used to pass by it everyday on the way to high school.

now that kids are skipping past their local CSU’s to have the sleepaway experience, these shortfalls are happening.

but it annoys me that F is placing frosh in their pricey dorms…that hurts low income kids.

I think this student is a bit too far to commute with someone driving them each day up to 75 minutes each way! I Traffic can be brutal on the 57.

Most CSUs are still predominantly commuter schools. That includes Fullerton, with only 38% of frosh living in the dorms (a proxy for resident students, since frosh resident students tend to live in the dorms). Fullerton’s local area for frosh applicants is Orange County, and Chino, Corona/Norco, Walnut, Whittier, and Alvord School District.

The CSUs with more residential student populations tend to be in areas where there are fewer students in reasonable commuting range, such as San Luis Obispo (which also has high demand from out-of-area students), Humboldt, Monterey Bay, Sonoma, and Chico (i.e. those whose “local area” is quite large because of low population density).

CSUF has fraternities I think, maybe housing there is cheaper.

yes, fullerton has frats, but an incoming frosh couldnt live there.

yup, yup…and the 91, and the 55, and the 22, and the 405, plus the other freeways that I have painfully been re-experiencing for the last 8 days.

Presumably, you can see why some students in Fullerton’s “local area” may find commuting impractical. I would not be surprised if the impracticality of commuting is a significant reason for living on campus for those students there who do live on campus.
