is it possible to get off the waitlist?

idk if i've been waitlisted at any of the schools, but i'm pretty sure that i'll be waitlisted at a couple.
i know that getting off the waitlist is VERY HARD, but do you think sending in a rec from my principal and another adult may help?
or maybe writing a letter about how much i want to go to the school...?
or maybe that i applied w/o fa?

Do a search on the board - there are a BUNCH of really good threads from last year about waitlists and bump one up.
But here is a question - if you didn't need FA, why did you apply for it?

i didn't apply for it.

Sorry, I read your post to mean you applied and didn't need it.

Students have to get off of the waitlist because my daughter was accepted at Exeter, Hotchkiss, and Lawrenceville last year, and Hotchkiss called us to see if my daughter would be attending because they wanted to see if that spot was open for their waitlist. My daughter decided on Exeter, so at least one spot opened up there. However, my daughter was wailtlisted at three other schools, and never got off of those lists.

Yes, it's possible. Look back at posts from other years and you'll find discussion on it. I think someone named Olivia got off the Choate waitlist last year.

Hey - I am Olivia and I did get off the waitlist for the class of '11. I'm currently a sophomore at Choate. PM me if you'd like.

Olivia - I thought you left Choate last winter? Am I losing it? Different Olivia?

I did leave...then decided to come back. I didn't tell anyone since I hadn't been on CC in a while. I just thought that I would regret it. I'm not saying it isn't hard, but I'm glad I did.

Oh good. I'm glad to hear it. :)

it has to be possible to get off the wait list
I got into 3 schools and I'm only going to 1 of them to there are 2 spots at tops schools right there
I think they have to have really strong applicants they just couldn't quite squeeze in and will be really happy to take

Peteya - those 2 spots aren't necessarily going to students on the waitlist. Schools accept more students than they can hold, because they have an expected yield. You might just be contributing to those numbers.

oh - yeah - that makes sense - thanks for setting me straight :(
still - everyone like me who can't go someplace cuts down on the 'more students than they can hold' and whittles it down towards the waitlist, so I'll look on the bright side for everyone here who has worked so very hard and invested so much hope

I get what you mean. I remember when I was on the WL I would go on CC and see how many people had gotten into Choate and weren't going. :P

But that year, even after the school had been notified of who was coming/who wasn't, there still wasn't enough space. Students sometimes end up getting in long after April 11th, because some students decide not to go to boarding school at the last minute, or there are switches in forms (i.e. grades), etc.

Thought I would bump those, for those on the WL at diff. schools.

Hey Olivia,

I was wait-listed at Hotchkiss and want to get in more than I can even say. I know that you got off the waitlist and I was wondering how? How can I help my chances? I am willing to work very very hard to get of this list and on to the class of 2012 list.
Thanks

I sent you a PM

olivia567-- did you get any FA from Choate after coming off the WL? Did you need any?

Hi Olivia, can you PM me with your story? I have the same question ^
Thnaks!

Hi,
Please PM me - I got waitlisted at Choate and Choate was my first choice. Should I write a letter, cry, or plead ? :) Seriously, please let me know how you got off the WL.
