I am currently a sophomore in high school and I have a 3.6 unweighted gpa. What grades do I need to get higher than a 3.8/is it possible??
All or almost all A’s. GPA is just a weighted average of your grades, so computing unweighted GPA is just simple arithmetic.
Thank you for your reply. Do you think it would be possible to raise it by my first semester of senior year?
If you do well throughout and get strong grades (nearly or all A’s), then yes.
To have a reasonable chance of improving your overall GPA depends on the amount of time left until graduation. The closer you are to graduation, the impact on the overall GPA declines. So, proportion is important…the fewer shots remaining reduces the possible number of bulls eyes you can accrue.
You are early in your academic career so have more time to gather grades that will contribute positively to your overall GPA. But is that the real question? You could calculate the number of classes remaining that would be required to increase your GPA. Let’s say you had to get six As to reach your 3.8 goal. However, concurrently you would need to figure out how many and how much lower grades in remaining classes would be factored into the mix. You would be trying to keep scales balanced as weights would be added to each side.
It seems to me that worrying about grades in individual classes and the number of A grades required to improve your GPA takes too much time and energy away from your energy to study. The best plan it seems to me is doing your best to earn the best grade possible for you in each class and each term and let your GPA take care of itself. Don’t fret, study.
Thank you for your reply! Reading your comment made me more motivated to study haha.
I can’t speak for all colleges but something that was pushed on me was colleges love improvement. Bad grades first two years? come back swinging with all As (or close) junior year and that’s a big plus.
Thank you for your reply! I remember reading that somewhere as well and it motivates me to do better the following years.
