Hello! I began to apply to Georgetown for RD, and I paid the required amount, but after a long talk with my parents we decided that it was not the best choice for me. We were on the fence about this for a long time, but unfortunately their timing in telling me not to apply was not the best!

I know this sounds very foolish, but is it possible for me to rescind the application and possibly get refunded? I only started the Georgetown application process yesterday.

Does anyone have any advice? Thank you so much for trying to help me!

I don’t remember how it was for Georgetown, since they had such an awful website, but for most other schools there was an option to “withdraw application” somewhere. I’d also call their admissions office to try and get a refund. Since you did this yesterday, another (questionably legal?) possible option would be to stop payment on your credit card.

If none of these work, there’s not much you can do. Application fees are a scam - a friend of mine completed his application to a school and their admissions office misplaced his transcript, didn’t notify him quickly enough for him to resend, and discarded his “incomplete” application with no refund.

Wow, thank you so much for the advice–and for the quick reply! I hope it works. But that’s so terrible about your friend. I’m so sorry that something like that happened.

I assume that you only did Part 1, which if I remember correctly is just some contact info. Even if you can’t get a refund, I’d not do the app just to see if you can get in, because Georgetown wants all test scores, and if you took the SAT and ACT, that’ll be like $20 for a school that you won’t be going to.

Our daughter applied to a school then changed her mind and withdrew her application. Without our even requesting it, her app fee was refunded. Just ask; it may be no big deal to them.

I have online access to my credit card. In 30 seconds I can contest any charge. I have never seen much of a battle for any amount under 100$. I would do that here. Completely legal. Great for online purchase disagreements also.

If you click the “Application Change” drop down box, you can click “Withdraw Application” and then send them a message regarding your desire to withdraw.
