During Junior year of High School, I took a concurrent enrollment class that allowed me to take Calculus 1 (equivalent to Calculus AB) at a community college. I ended up with a C grade as I neglected the math class to worry about my high school GPA (later I will explain how this came back to bite me). I continue to finish high school and ultimately decided to attend community college due to financial issues. I follow the prerequisite for my major according to assist, Computer Science, for the next 2 years. When it came time for applying, I applied to the UC and CSU colleges in California. My overall GPA at the time was 3.72 which I think is below average. When the decision date comes out like in late April/ early May, I got rejected from UC Irvine and UC Davis because I got a C in Calculus 1 because the requirement needs at least a B in the course. I know for UC Davis they want a 3.4 gpa for all calculus 1,2,3 combine but I end up on the short end of the stick with 3.33 in the calculus series since I cannot pull it up with other Calculus 2 and 3 ( got A’s in both, my college does not do plus or minus).
Question: Is there any way to fix my Calculus 1 grade as it is something that the high school me screwed up about 3 ½ years ago? I do not know if it is possible to retake the class at the same community college to fix the grade and I have been hearing different opinions by the advisors that some said yes and some said no. I contacted the admission of those UC but it was a vague response as they also seem to be unsure. If I cannot switch is there any other majors that similar to CS, maybe also somewhat business/econ related .I do not know if anyone has to go through this process before.
@Gumbymom Yes, I did contact the admission at a few UC’s and some said no while other is unsure and told me the best way is look for an alternative major.
@ucbalumnus I applied to UCSC and they did admit me but I declined offer the last minute to attend SJSU (closer to home) but I need to do a quite number of physics course as well intro engineer course under software engineer so I withdraw my application to do CC another year, due to class get filled so fast at SJSU. I never been to UCR and UCM, but I heard they out in the desert. What is the social life like at those schools?
UCR and UCM are inland but not in the desert. Being inland the temperatures are higher in the summer months similar to UCD.
UCR is around an hour from Los Angeles and Riverside is a large suburb close to the mountains and within 1-2 hours of beaches.
UCM is in the Central Valley, more rural than UCD but again not in the desert. UCM is a great option since it is smaller and newer than the other UC’s with many research opportunities.
Both campuses are great up and coming UC campuses.
